About this listen
In 1985, Stanley Kubrick encouraged Matthew Modine to keep a journal and take photographs while playing the lead role of Pvt. Joker - a combat correspondent - on the set of his Vietnam War film, Full Metal Jacket. In 2005, Modine published a limited edition book of his diary and photos which later became an interactive experience for the iPad. Now, with the Full Metal Jacket Diary audiobook, fans can listen to Modine as he performs his diary with sound effects and original music. This deeply immersive, first-hand account reveals what it was like to work with Stanley Kubrick, one of cinema's most enigmatic filmmakers.
©2005 Matthew Modine (P)2014 Beacon AudiobooksThis Audible presentation is very honest and true! I was there. I have a single card credit on the picture as one of the two Make-up Artists, Christine Allsopp.
I spent months on the picture in the same pressure cooker as the rest of the cast and crew, memorably and including the Pagoda set, the Wall (that bloody wall), Lt. Touchdown’s death, Doc and Eightball’s deaths, Pvt. Cowboy’s death, the Newsreel interview, Mass grave, Pvt Pile’s Suicide and The Micky Mouse song.
Sharing our thoughts at the time was impossible, as there was no talking allowed on set and we were all very absorbed by and too busy being in and dealing with the moment to be able to reflect and process. Most of us were only in our 20’s, just beginning to figure out who we were.
40 Years later it’s interesting to hear Matthew’s personal story and perspective on filming the same days, weeks, months, same scenes and events. It has been fun to be reminded of details, I remember but had forgotten how Terry the 1st AD used to chew the aerial of his Motorola.
Whoever voiced Stanley in this recording did a great job! He sounded so familiar when I first heard “him, I was immediately transported back 40 years. Good job!
A very enlightening and enjoyable trip down memory lane, remembering what it was like to work with Kubrick, which wasn’t ever a walk in the park, but it was an immense privilege. Thank you.
Matthew’s honesty rocks! I highly recommend to all Kubrick fans and film buffs.
