Summary

The first child was taken from her house.

The second from his mother's car.

The third from her own bedroom.…

When Helen and Sean Phillips go out for the evening, leaving their teenage daughter babysitting little Frankie, they have no idea that they are about to face every parent's greatest fear.

Detective Inspector Patrick Lennon is hopeful that the three children who have been abducted in this patch of south-west London will be returned safe and well. But when a body is found in a local park, Lennon realizes that time is running out - and that nothing in this case is as it seems.…

Blending police procedural with psychological thriller, From the Cradle will have every parent checking that their children are safe in their beds…then checking again.

Superb! Up there with the best!

What made the experience of listening to From the Cradle the most enjoyable?

I am frankly amazed at how good this is. I have read books by Mark Edwards before, and they were good, but this is in another league. Perhaps this is the result of Louise Voss' contribution, I don't know. What made this so good was how richly drawn each character was, allowing the listener/reader to learn interesting and important things about many of them long into the book. As a consequence, there were many surprises and 'ah ha' moments right through to the end. These moments, and the little twists, never felt contrived. There was much suspense, but it was written with a light touch. The DCI Patrick Lennon, is worth a particular mention. I'm really disappointed that this is a stand alone novel. I would love a series with this character. He was so human, flawed, but in a subtle way and very likeable.

Ok but not brilliant

I thought this storyline was good, if maybe a bit far fetched, but the writing was clumsy and a bit juvenile in parts. It was easy enough listening but not as slick as it could have been.

Total nonsense

Not a single character that could evoke any feelings in me, the story was convoluted, far fetched and absolute nonsense. It also jumped all over the place.

The only reason I managed a second star was that I did actually see it through to the end - so I did want to get to the answer - it wasn't worth the torture of the tale though.

Hmmm.... not the best book

Any additional comments?

It was Ok. Not the best book I have listened too, and certainly not the worst. There were some plot holes that you could drive a bus through (the actual kidnap for one!), but there were also some twists that I didnt see coming!I did keep 'zoning out', and to be honest, I finished it about 2 weeks ago and as I scrolled through my library to see what book to listen to next, I thought "Oh, did I read that?" and had trouble to recall the story - It clearly didnt make a huge impact on me! No I do recall it though and to be honest I wouldn't actively seek out more book by this author.

I gave up

I've never stopped listening to a book before but this was excruciating to listen to. Took forever to get going. Was long winded and the narration was awful. Lennon was portrayed as a bit of a high pitched over earnest boy and the pronunciation of some very basic and well known words were laughable. I have the other books by these two and enjoyed them but this actually irritated me to listen to. Unrealistic behaviour by the characters and in the end, listening to the narrator doing a little girls baby voice was enough for me. Had to give it up as a bad job. I don't know the ending of this book and I don't care. Such a shame as these two usually write a good story and the narrators of the other books have done them justice.

Captivating

This is a great listen, well narrated. Great story with many twists and turns. Interesting observations of different relationships. Recommend

Surprising turn of events when...

...one thought got it all figured out right at the end. Definitely an engaging story. Well recommended and as usual, from Mark E and Louise V, not disappointing.

Very good listen

Enjoyed it very much , lots of twists and turns, but still believable. Giving it 5 stars as I found I could not stop listening and although I wanted to get to the end I was sad when I did . Very easy to follow.

long winded ending. plot rather sordid and somewhat unrealistic but entertaining enough. a few subplots embedded within.
