Summary
James Bond is targeted for elimination by SMERSH, and the malevolent Colonel Rosa Klebb has set a trap in Istanbul. The bait is the Spektor decoding machine, which is to be delivered by the irresistible Tatiana Romanova. The assassin is Red Grant, a psychopath who has defected from the West. Bond and Tatiana become pawns in a game of cross and double-cross that reaches its deadly finale on the Orient Express.

Ian Fleming was born in London in 1908. He was educated at Eton and worked as a journalist in Moscow and a banker and stockbroker in London before becoming personal assistant to the Director of Naval Intelligence during the Second World War. He wrote his first Bond novel, Casino Royale, in 1952 at Goldeneye, his home in Jamaica. Since then James Bond has gone on to become a global phenomenon.
Toby Stephens’ expansive list of credits in film, theatre and television have earned him critical acclaim as a stage and screen actor of distinction. He will soon reprise his role as Captain Flint in the second season of Starz’s drama Black Sails, and recently starred in the critically acclaimed Private Lives at the Gielgud Theatre in London’s West End. Other theatre credits include Tom Stoppard’s The Real Thing at London’s Old Vic Theatre and Ibsen’s Doll’s House at the Donmar Warehouse. On film he played Gustav Graves in the James Bond movie Die Another Day.

So different from the films
My first Bond novel and a different world from the films. Does not pass the PC test in any way means shape or form but it is a product of the fifties and quite obviously so. If I see any more on offer I might pick them up

Thoroughly enjoyable
Great narration / acting by Toby Stephens. In fact, I think his performance was the best of the series (especially his portrayal of Karim).
I'm so glad I decided to listen to all the Bond books.

From Fleming with Love
Plot
After the lacklustre and frankly boring 4th book, Diamonds are Forever(however it gave us the film's opening song song sublimely by Shirley Bassey, so one positive...), I was apprehensive about starting this book. I love how in the first third of the book Fleming basically sets up the story, the villains, side characters and makes it so enthralling to get through. He does this all without introducing Bond which I think helps to build the tension. The rest of story plays out masterfully in what will be my currently favourite Fleming story so far.
Characters
James Bond our main character has been evolving in our time since we first me him in Casino Royale, it was quite interesting to see them make reference to Tiffany Case( Diamonds are Forever) and they simply part on amicable terms. I liked Bond pretty much the entire book and cant fault any logic he used, a dam fine character.
Side Characters
Darko Kerim, a fasinating side character and probably one of Flemings most well written and fun side characters. We get lots of funny and some really weird stories including the bizzare way he treats women.
Our villians Red Grant is made all the more interesting with a lengthy intro and a strange moon curse. The way Fleming describes Colonel Rosa Klebb is fascinating gross in the way he writes it
Narrator
I listened to this by Toby Stephens who performs an excellent job in voicing all characters in this story.

Brilliant
Have loved this book for years. But Toby's reading takes it to another level there's just something about his voice that really brings Fleming ' s discriptions to life

A classic stays classy
The original novel is a classic and as such has some troubling sections for an audience of today, but the adaptation does not shy away from them.
Thankfully not as tone-deaf in sections like the previous Bond entries like Live and Let Die, but a thrilling Cold War adventure that Toby Jones ably narrates

Zips along like an Aston Martin
Simply put this is a dual between two master spies. It's all anticipation and suspense and then suddenly the plan falls in place and Bond is on the ropes. It's a comparatively simple book, but cleverly structured and a very enjoyable listen.

Loved it
Probably one of the best books in the series - and personally the film is in my top five in the series. Toby Stephens is distinctive but he draws you in and the structure of the book in terms of how it builds the tension makes it impossible to switch off as an audio book. I was totally gripped even though I’ve seen the movie at least five times and read the book as a teenager in the early 80s - completely recommended - brilliant job by Toby - thank you
