Summary

Raised and trained in seclusion at a secret fortress on the edge of the northern wilds of the Kingdom of Ashai, a young warrior called Rezkin is unexpectedly thrust into the outworld when a terrible battle destroys all that he knows. With no understanding of his life’s purpose and armed with masterful weapons mysteriously bestowed upon him by a dead king, Rezkin must travel across Ashai to find the one man who may hold the clues to his very existence.

Determined to adhere to his last orders, Rezkin extends his protection to an unlikely assortment of individuals he meets along the way, often leading to humorous and poignant incidents.

As if pursuing an elite warrior across a kingdom, figuring out who he is and why everyone he knows is dead, and attempting to find these so-called friends and protect them is not enough, strange things are happening in the kingdom. New dangers begin to arise that threaten not only Rezkin and his friends, but possibly everyone in Ashai.

This is the first installment of an ongoing series. This book is intended for adult readers. It contains graphic violence, creative language, and sexual innuendo. This book does not contain explicit sexual content.

Simplicity is key.

I found this story to be very enjoyable. Simplicity of the story makes it an easy listen.

Just Brilliant

What made the experience of listening to Free the Darkness the most enjoyable?

The main character is built up beautifully with a lovely mix of him being a Vulcan and Segulah. The story is really clever with his development in a complex story.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Free the Darkness?

The interplay between the main character and as he builds his circle of 'friends' ;-), no point expanding as that would be a spoiler.

Which character – as performed by Nick Podehl – was your favourite?

Redskin, though Tam was pretty good as well

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Live by the code

outstanding

wasn't sure what was coming with this book, but reviews from some hardend fantasy fans for it persuaded me to give it a go and I'm happy I did! Story is good and makes you work to follow it. excellent listen with an excellent narration makes for a great all round experience. very much recommended.

simply brilliant

The story is rather simply, but its simplicity makes it easier to follow. Rezkin is a god in basically everything but yet lacks general common sense due to his reclusive upbringing. Which makes his involvement with everyday people even more interesting. his constant switch between roles and titles which others have placed on in assumption makes every situation fascinating from their prospective of him. I started this audio book simply on a whim and can honestly say I'm a huge already. I've listened to other audio books narrated by Nick Podehl and found myself sometime struggling to discern between which characters are speaking, But his narration for book is in no way at all lacking and his Rezkin impression is the very image I'd imagine. Now I must wait a month for the credit to continue the story and Rezkin growth.

Kel Kade's debut, and what a start it is!

If you could sum up Free the Darkness in three words, what would they be?

Fun, distinctive and covetous!

Who was your favorite character and why?

Rezkin - I really enjoyed his thought process about every day occurrences, which caused me on occasion to smile and laugh to myself. As a guy, I got pretty envious of his perfection, which is weird considering he's a fictional character, but that shows how much I enjoyed the book.

What about Nick Podehl’s performance did you like?

I believe it's the first time I've listened to Nick's narration, and believe he is stellar in his performance of the various characters.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Pretty much, and that's a rarity. I was staying up later than usual and listening to it during every spare moment.

Any additional comments?

The only qualm I have is with Rezkin's love interest, which I can sometimes find a bit annoying and too much.

Other than that, buy it, read it, listen to it.

Why don't more people know about this?

What made the experience of listening to Free the Darkness the most enjoyable?

A fantastic story with characters you care about and detail in every sentence.

What other book might you compare Free the Darkness to, and why?

I can honestly say I have no idea what to compare it to, in a class all by itself.

Which character – as performed by Nick Podehl – was your favourite?

I felt he was a fantastic choice to narrate this book and he was more than adept at all the characters. But if I had to pick one I would say Tam. He really made them all feel real but Tam had a certain something.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I didn't want it to end, if I could have I would have but at over 15hours I don't have many uninterrupted 15 hour stretches!

Any additional comments?

I cant wait for the next in the series. And following that the TV show or Movie as this is a show/film I would love to see.

Fantastic narration for a good story but...

Great narration.
Good writting with some Shakespeare-esq farce. Let down by an abrupt unsatisfying ending
