Summary

At midnight comes the point of balance. Of danger. The instant of utter stillness when, between two beats of the heart, an alternative reality can slip through, like a blade between the ribs, and switch you into a new and terrifying world.

Four Past Midnight: four heart-stopping accounts of that moment when the familiar world fractures beyond sense, the fragments spinning away from the desperate, clutching reach of sanity....

Mary Poppins meets Stephen King

Love Stephen King and this is a good collection of books but the narration spoiled it for me. Everytime Our ex SAS hero opened his mouth, I was filled with horror. Not because I was terrified but because I couldnt believe how bad the English accent was. He sounded exactly like Bert from Mary Poppins. it was cringeworthy and spoiled the whole collection. I never thought I would see the day when I returned an SK book but it has finally come.
Sorry Stephen, nothing to fo with your talent. Have to ask though, what were the production team thinking? Or maybe they just weren't.

Genuinely creepy at times but poor endings

King has great setups in all of these tales but the ‘reveals’ were all too overblown to keep me caring except one. I found the first tale, the Langoliers, great while everything remained a mystery but increasingly silly after that. Ditto ‘The Library Policeman’. I’d describe Sun Dog as actually genuinely scary until the very end when again it just lost its hold. The one that worked best as a whole is the ‘secret window’ one, but there are things which spoilt its pacing too. So not King’s best, especially i think if you like his older, more carefully constructed novels. If you like his more recent ones, you might enjoy better.

great book

really enjoyed these stories. The library policeman in particular is very chilling and at times hard to listen to but such a good tale.

Four superb stories, well told

“The Langoliers” and “Secret Window, Secret Garden” are well known and good stories but they are ably supported by the other two novellas in this collection.
“The Library Policeman” is one of King’s more troubling stories and not for the fainted hearted. But well written and well performed here.
“The Sun Dog” is the weakest of the four but nonetheless a good story. Feels a tiny bit long.
Recommended collection.

Great stories some dodgy accents

I enjoyed all of these stories ,I've read the book and as I've really got into audiobooks recently I thought I'd get this one ,I'd read the reviews re Dafoe's awful English accent and thought they were exaggerating, however they were not.He also does an awful version of Janice from friends for the teenage girl,at first it was funny then it got annoying, really really annoying.Good narrators can make or break a book in my opinion and the rest of the narrators were fine but I couldn't wait to finish the Langoliers because I couldn't stand his narration anymore

Brilliant!

The first story in this collection tended to drag a little and we're not the best narrated by Willem Dafoe (as good as he is) and found myself willing it to end at certain points. After originally watching the 2 part TV/Movie adaptation "The Langoliers" I preferred this to the Audible version, that said the 3 other stories were excellent! narrated by James Woods, Ken Howard and Tim Sample and would definitely recommend.

King does it again

4 adequate stories guaranteed to scare. The narration could be a bit better but overall thoroughly enjoyable. King is a master at giving you the creeps.
