A journey from source to sea. Blending fact and fiction, history and hearsay. An ode to the River Exe. From deepest Exmoor to the sea at Exmouth, the Exe courses through vibrant bustling cityscapes and remote moorland wilderness alike, shaping lives and landscapes as it does so.

The river has a million tales to tell. These are a few of them. The new book from the best-selling author of Just off for a Walk and Walk Sleep Repeat.

I love all of Stephen Reynolds walking books, as others have said this blends in some fictional interludes. It shouldn’t work, but it really does. I think maybe because of the humorous delivery of the previous books, this book throws up some surprises. At the heart of it, it’s still about walking the River Exe from source to sea, so don’t be put off if you are looking for a good walking narrative, you won’t be disappointed.

This now may favourite walking book

As a huge fan of Bill Bryson, the three books on walking are excellent. Pretty sad that Covid put pay in to these humorous books, been looking for years for a replacement to Bill who’s books I have reread so many times that I could just about recite them(was super sad at Steven Katy’s death in 2023). Anyway, things change and better to go out on the top of something than carry on when your heart is not in it. Thanks for the books Stephen , they will be reread many times going forward

Sad it was his last walking book

I really enjoyed this one. Funniest and most interesting. Well done, Stephen. Please could we have more like this? It has left wanting more! It is indeed written a little different to his usual ramblings I ,have enjoyed all so far but this still remains in my opinion, the best so far.

Throughly enjoyable throughout

For me the shift into lumps of theatrical stories really didn't work, only managed an hour before wanting to throw my phone out the car window and bailed. Shame as spent my childhood summers at Westermill farm and exploring and paddling the Exe. Still, 75% hit rate is good.

loved the first 3
