Where the fae and human realms meet…

Same old sleepy small-town France. I spend my days serving patisserie badly to the outlandish crowd at the café, and writing folklore research papers that will never, ever be published.

That’s until my clanger of a drunken hookup with the town’s hot new doctor, who turns into a hideous drac and eats Grampi’s favourite goat. Oh, and not to mention, a troop of ragtag fae storms my home, a fatal illness devastates the town, and a fae curse threatens Grampi’s life.

I may be having trouble accepting this new and delightful side of reality, but my knowledge of folklore means I have a shot at sorting this whole mess out before the town and everything I love is destroyed. The only thing is, I’ll have to work with the devious, scumbag doctor (he’s still picking goat out of his teeth). And he just might be the biggest challenge of all.

With flawed characters and strong emotional arcs, the Folkloric series weaves a beguiling hidden fae world with epic stakes, all the feels and delectable series-wide, slow-burn romance. The chosen one and the perfect hero were so traumatised by the goblins, they upped and left for another book.

Camille spends her time working in a cafe and caring for her elderly grandfather and their goats. In her free time she researches the local folklore and stories. When she meets the new doctor Lucas, her decision to spend a night with him, opens her eyes to a truth far stranger than any local story.

This is a fast paced adventure filled with French folklore. Since I know nothing about Folklore, this was an interesting aspect to the story, that added a unique twist to this contemporary fantasy story.

Camille is a strong female character who isn't afraid to share kindness and compassion, while also sharing the flaws and fears that make her human. She has placed family and responsibility ahead of her own dreams and is frustrated by it. Camille might not love the life she is living but she does love her Grampi, and will do anything for him.

Lucas is more complicated, he has a talent for healing and shows remarkable bravery, but he isn't afraid of violence or doing whatever it takes to achieve his goals. He can be selfish and often forgets he has introduced Camille to a whole new reality with very little explanation. Clearly he has secrets that we haven't been introduced to yet that have shaped his character. The Men for example are incredibly loyal and protective of him.

The two characters are a nice compliment to each other. This was a great introduction to the series and I am eager to see how it unfolds.

Now available in book and audiobook form, both entertaining. Urban (French mountain village) fantasy. I read this book in one go. Loved it from first page to last. Easy read, lots of snarky humour, some magic, Fae and Gods, and maybe a bit of romance in the fresh mountain air. Camille is living in her home village, researching and writing about folklore while working in the patisserie. But there is so much more going on than she has aver imagined. Eyes opened she finds that cakes can be helpful and dangerous, sharp swords are definitely helpful and dangerous and that a maybe romance with the handsome new local doctor is not such a good idea after all. This is a brilliantly written UF read, set in a small village the south of France. With French folklore, myths, magic, curses, humor, family and friendships, action, adventure, great characters, a dash of romance and an army of tiny men who live for pillaging and a good fight (though they're very polite about it).

Camille loves studying folklore and is hoping to have her paper on the subject published; while also enjoying working at her friend's patisserie and helping her Grampi look after his goats and farm. He's not been well for years, only talking about the goats, though she's worked out how to translate some of what he tells her.

After another confrontation with one of the villagers, who's a bit of a troll in his comments, she goes to a bar to unwind. But after waking up with the new doctor she learns that all the myths she's been researching might be reality.

After opening her eyes to the fae around them, Lucas has a proposition for her; but with her Grampi under a curse, people in the village falling ill and dark fae escaping their prison the job interview will have to wait. Camille has a lot on her hands with fangirling in fae while beginning to work with Lucas, a drac (seducing, goat eating, succubus) and finally putting the sword skills her Grampi taught her to good use.

I particularly loved the Men of Bedeilhac; they remind me of Terry Pratchett's Wee Nac McFeegles (The Wee Free Men, though they’re not blue and don’t have the Scottish accent). They add a brilliant dash of humor & I loved how they chatted with Lucas, so calmly and politely, as if the chaos they caused was a common day occurrence.

A great story and if you love Terry Pratchett's Discworld or the goblins in Labyrinth, you will love this. I could not put down and enjoyed listening to it just as much, with Liz May Brice bringing all of the characters to life.
