Summary

An illegal immigrant is found murdered in an Edinburgh housing scheme: a racist attack or something else? Rebus is drawn into the case but has other problems: his old police station has closed, and his masters would rather he retire than stick around. As Rebus investigates, he must visit an asylum seekers' detention centre, deal with the sleazy Edinburgh underworld and maybe even fall in love....

Siobhan has problems of her own. A teenager has disappeared from home, and Siobhan is drawn into helping the family, which means travelling too close to the web of a convicted rapist. Then there are two skeletons - a woman and an infant - found buried beneath a concrete cellar floor in Fleshmarket Close. The scene begins to look like an elaborate stunt - but whose and for what purpose? And how can it tie to the murder on the unforgiving housing scheme known as Knoxland?

Classic Rebus

As usual Rankin starts off with what you assume to be a fairly straight forward murder but the plot soon twists and turns and you wonder where it's all going to go. Again, as usual, there's a theme, in this case immigration and you do wonder if Rebus' views are Rankin's, not that it matters.

The narration is good, the Scot's accent just right. Having lived north of te border for 15 years it was fun to hear some of the phrases and wordes again but for those of you not familiar with the vernacular we have the trusty Sargeant to provide the questionning looks.

All in all a good addition to the canon.

Excellent

A good insight into the immigration debate. This story is before the creation of the mammoth Police Scotland and so it’s a piece of history as well as a blooming good tale with twists and turns that will have the reader entranced. Great listen on Audible with narration by the multi-accented James Macpherson.

Thought I was reading the Guardian Newspaper

This could have been a good book but it has a very boring section in the middle. People generally read detective novels to escape from reality.
Few of the characters in the book were likeable, Rebus was illogical antagonistic towards many characters which tends to give the game away as to who the bad guys are.

An amazing story, woven into a tale you must hear!

I enjoyed this book tremendously. I couldn't sleep until I reached a break.
Give it enough time to manage all the twists and turns and make some notes as you read as that might help.
Enjoy another Ian Rankin book, but not until you are sure your brain is ready to reset.

Classic Rebus

Really enjoyable listen a good story with plenty of twists. Rankin at his best will definitely get more stories in this format.

Disappointed

Boring, slow with unlikeable characters. Love match was way off, an unbelievable romance. The last 30 minutes were the best part of the book, but I'd guessed the ending. I've enjoyed all the previous books, so I'm very disappointed with this one. I will check the reviews before my next Rebus purchase.

Worst one yet

Am attempt to make Rebus look PC and normal Scotts racist. Hope that theme doesn't carry on to future books or my Ian Rankin days are over.
