Summary

Best-selling author Juliet Marillier’s Sevenwaters series has been praised as a “magnificent saga” (Alernative Worlds) that is a “gripping tale of enduring love” (Publishers Weekly). Now, Marillier returns to Sevenwaters with the story of a young woman destined to unlock the secrets of the Otherworld…

Maeve, daughter of Lord Sean of Sevenwaters, was badly burned as a child and carries the legacy of that fire in her crippled hands. After ten years, she’s returning home, having grown into a courageous, forthright woman with a special gift for gentling difficult animals. But while her body’s scars have healed, her spirit remains fragile, fearing the shadows of her past.

Sevenwaters is in turmoil. The fey prince Mac Dara has become desperate to see his only son, married to Maeve’s sister, return to the Otherworld. To force Lord Sean’s hand, Mac Dara has caused a party of innocent travelers on the Sevenwaters border to vanish - only to allow their murdered bodies to be found, one by one. When Maeve finds the body of one of the missing men in a remote part of the woods, she and her brother Finbar embark on a journey that may bring about the end of Mac Dara’s reign, or lead to a hideous death. If she is successful, Maeve may open the door to a future she has not dared to believe possible...

Only listen if you've read all the others

Ms Marillier can't write a bad book - I think she is a fantastic writer. But of all her books this is my least favourite of hers. I enjoyed it as I always do but Maeve is probably the hardest of her characters to like. She says she does not have self pity but that is unfortunately often how she comes across. She has reasons for self pity of course but it is not an attractive trait. However, her care for animals and her brother means you do not dislike her. I also find the "romance" in this book down right bizarre - there isn't really any romance and it kind of appears from nowhere. If you've read and enjoyed the other Sevenwaters books then you will probably want to listen to this to complete the story but don't have your usual high expectations. And don't let it put you off Ms Marillier's other books - they are all amazing - this one is just a one off dip.

A wonderful ending.

I’m glad I went back to this series because it has been a wonderfully entertaining experience. I love that all of the characters have had their own time to shine. Above everything, I think the narrator sweeps the stories forward while keeping the basic family story together really well - she does a fantastic job!

Thank goodness they changed narrator

I think the overriding hero throughout this whole series has to be Ciaran for his steadfastness, his endurance, his strength and his sacrifice, to do what was right in spite of the cost to his own self.

This has been a very moving series, causing many tears.

Beautifully read - interesting heroine

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would not because I think that this is not as good as the other books in the series - it is still a good book and probably worth reading/listening to especially if you liked the others - it does have some satisfying twists and an interesting main character but it lacked something of the spark that made her earlier books so wonderful - I did really like the way that it was read however - it really brought the book to life

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

I would have focused on the villain and made the struggle between the factions of faery and the main characters more central rather than focusing almost entirely on the human concerns - I felt that more magic might have added to this story

What does Rosalyn Landor bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

She brings an authentic accent which brings the main character to life and also I am certain I would not have been able to pronounce one or two words correctly such as geis

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Not really but then it was a very long book! I certainly enjoyed listening to it

Any additional comments?

I would recommend reading the earlier books

Excellent Series

Absolutely loved every one of the books in this Series. The Characters are given such life by the Narrator and there are little twists and turns that you never suspect. Well written even if it does take some time to actually get into each story before it gets suspenseful!! I would recommend if you are a romantic fantasy lover.

Breathtaking.

Loved it from beginning to end. The narrator is magnificent and breathes life into all of the characters. I'm going back to the beginning to relish it all over again!

an epic adventure

I have loved every moment of the seven waters saga - and even though I had already read the books years ago having it read to me through audible gave me a deeper tale that I have loved even more - I feel like I have lived alongside the characters and fallen in love with them. I feel slightly bereft now they have gone

As the final book in the series it needed zing

Most of this series was great, some great characters, but this one fell flat for me, so very disappointed. The reader in this and other books makes all the males sound exactly the same. It would best not attempt a male voice if she cannot do them well with some variations. It made listening very confusing at times. The reader of the first in the series was brilliant!!

The story just ambles along when this writer I’m sure could have been more creative, as with most of the other episodes.
