Summary

Daily Mail Best Children’s Books of the Year

Set in the snowy northern forests of an imagined prehistoric world, Fireborn is the middle-grade debut of the decade. At turns exciting, funny and heart-wrenchingly sad, it marks the introduction of an unstoppable new voice in children’s storytelling.

Twelve has spoken the Pledge, and now she is a Huntling. She has given up her name to train in the art of fighting monsters and keeping the peace, and she won’t get to choose a new one until she has earned it.

But when the Lodge’s walls are breached for the first time, and a little girl is taken, Twelve is the only one interested in going after a child....

Teaming up with Dog, the Stone Guardian of the Lodge, Twelve ends up on an epic adventure that will change her life, her name—and her entire world.

Critic reviews

"This debut gets off to a scorching start. Gripping and immersive." (New Statesman, Best Children’s Books for Christmas 2021)

"This remarkable debut pulsates with energy and drama." (Daily Mail, Best Children’s Books of the Year)

"Fireborn is a thrillingly assured debut that grips from the get-go. Featuring a fiercely charismatic heroine and a cast of extraordinary companions, it transports the reader to a fascinating landscape of ice and peril. Aisling Fowler conjures up the perfect balance of high adventure, breathless action and eerie wonder, mixing it all with scenes of genuine emotional power. Elegantly structured, endlessly exciting, Fireborn is the perfect introduction to a rich and magical new world." (Jonathan Stroud, author of the Bartimaeus series)

Uh-may-zing

I struggle to get into books, but this was gripping! The storyline was clever, felt original and flowed at a good pace. The narrator was perfect - nice voice and a variety of fun accents. Fireborn may be aimed at children but this adult loved it!

Read along to the audiobook

I'm not going to lie I have had this book on my shelf for over a year before I decided to pick it up.
Maybe I was waiting for the right time to read it. Well I'm happy to say that this was definitely the right time.
This book was a fantastic middle grade debut and I'm in my late 30's.
It has found family, friendship, magic, legends, and a fantastic array of characters and just the right amount of spooky-ness that made it a perfect October read.
I am now eagerly awaiting for the second Fireborn book to come out.

Superb

Wonderful story, gripping, moving and with just the right notes of humour, as well as brilliantly narrated. I adored this audiobook, and I’m sixteen! It proved to be an excellent distraction from exam stress.

Surprisingly good!

I really enjoyed this book. At 1st I dismissed it as a kid's book but the storyline drew me in. The narration is excellent. There are some funny moments too. A book about friendships, loss and new beginnings with some real little horrors too.

Don't forget they are kids!!

If you make it past the annoyance of the main characters being their child-like selves and taking ages to learn lessons you can enjoy the wonderful final climax. Very well read
