Summary

An engaging and practical guided tour of the simple and nature-inspired ways that Finns stay happy and healthy - including the powerful concept of sisu, or everyday courage.

Sisu - a kind of everyday courage - is the Finnish approach to well-being that is turning lives around. In this beautiful book - part memoir, part guide - Katja shows how to embrace the daily practices that make Finns among the happiest people in the world.

Topics include:

  • Movement as medicine: How walking, biking and swimming every day are good for what ails us - and best done outside the confines of a gym
  • Forest therapy: Why there's no substitute for getting out into nature on a regular basis
  • Healthy eating: What the Nordic diet can teach us all about feeding body, mind and soul
  • The gift of sisu: Why Finns embrace a special form of courage, grit and determination as a national virtue - and how anyone can dig deeper to survive and thrive through tough times

In Finding Sisu discover the ways in which you too can integrate this age-old philosophy of hope and perseverance into your life, wherever you are in the world, whatever challenges you may face.

Find your courage. Find your grit. Find your sisu.

Interesting concept, great ideas, needs work

A great book with some refreshing and interesting ideas but perhaps needs some storytelling work

Inspiring

Most inspiring, especially as I am also a Finn who returned to my roots to find a very different culture. I'm not sure if readers without a Finnish connection would enjoy it as much.

Practical, enlightening, comforting

As a half-Finn living in France I can really relate to this book. Its straightforward practical information and advice together with its Finnish culturual backdrop makes me nostalgic for Finland and the Finnish mindset. The only problem for me was the rather inapprpriate matter of fact narration at times as well as the often badly pronounced Finnish words. Also a bad edit leading to répétition of a chapter. I recommend this book to anyone wanting to improve mild depression and wanting to learn a little about Finland.

Super. Content and just brilliant

Really enjoyed this. I’ve just taken up sea swimming, in the Irish Sea of the North of England and will be following many of the tips

Unfortunately there are a few technical production problems with the later chapters. Please re-edit as the overlaps and phasing in and out stop this from being brilliant. Would love to give five star, but these technical issues should be address.

A super book that was recommended to me and I shall also recommend to others. Brilliant content, put in a beautiful inspiring manner that makes me feel and think positivity - thank you

Finnish thinking

Loved the information. Both thought provoking, balanced and informative because it's the author's experience of living in Finland. Audiobook was particularly good.

slow down

I kind of enjoyed this little sneakpeak into another approach on life. I really believe that everyone has something to take it home from a book like this.

A self discovery

As a Finn having lived outside Finland for 27 years, I found this booked explained amazingly how and why I am the way I am. It went into depth about the personality traits in honest way and made me think that all my friends ought to listen to this to understand me better.
All my querky ways/ habits makes sense to me now and explained in a why I can re-tell to others.
Greatly performed, wasn't keen on tone/voice changes when quoting other people. Great effort for trying to pronounce Finnish word and/or names.
Enjoyable listen - definitely recommend to anyone interested in Finnish culture and people.

Strong start - quickly fizzled

I struggled to listen the book after several chapters. The beginning was promising, yet after the initial explorations the author made, the tone of the text almost reversed entirely, and switched to self-aggrandising posturing and focusing on nothing what the book started off with, leaving topics half-finished. No deeper discussions on what "sisu" is or could be, but instead anecdotes of the author's experiences in Finland.
