About this listen

She was a monster, sleek and gleaming, designed to strike without warning like the dreaded shark. She was the USS Mako, as fearless and bold as any submarine that ever prowled the blue Pacific. Her mission: seek out and destroy the hitherto invincible ships of the Japanese Imperial Navy - and revenge the earlier defeats of a long and dirty war. Here is the story of the men who pitted their lives against impossible odds in the most dangerous branch of the American armed services. It is a story of men pushed to the breaking point and beyond in the most nerve-wracking, heart-stirring warfare of all, a story of glory, grit, and guts, and of the astonishing resources that human beings call forth when put to the ultimate test.

"A well-paced and strongly felt mix of action and heroic individualism." ( Kirkus)

This was a gripping and heartfelt story about Submarine warfare. The Author created scenes that left you turning page after page, The narrator was good and made you feel part of the story. The pace of the story was well balanced, with some comedy amongst the action. The characters were believable and each had their own characteristics. A great read and a must for anyone who enjoys naval warfare.

An action packed, fast pasted story about the crew of an American submarine set in the theatre of WW2...
Detailed technical descriptions of submarine equipment, procedures, tactics and operations at sea.
Good character development and an engaging storyline. Gripping stuff!
Unfortunately the production was let down by the narrator's bizarre attempts at various accents.
Every non-American accent sounded like a Cockney who had lived in Scotland, worked in Ireland and finally settled in Australia...
The narrator was clearly "out of his depth" (see what I did there).
Shame really, I was fully engaged in the plot up until the "accents" began. Couldn't get beyond chapter 24.
This is not the first time Audible has tasked an otherwise perfectly capable American narrator with a "foreign" accent and ruined a book.
Returning book.

"Dick Van Dyke at sea..."
