Publisher's Summary

[Contains some explicit content] Narrated by award-winning actor Martin Sheen, The Home Front: Life in America During World War II takes listeners into the lives of Americans at home who supported the war effort and sustained the country during wartime. The war brought immediate, life-changing shifts; from the rationing of butter, to an explosion of war-related jobs, to mixed-signals about the role of women in society. Feel what living in the United States was like for everyday people during this disruptive and uncertain period of American history in the newest Audible Original series. Martha Little is the Executive Producer. Dan Gediman is the Series Producer.

    "A superb documentary 5*"

After reading the reviews on Audible.com (USA site) I nearly passed on this. Though with the dangling carrot in front of me, namely Martin Sheen, thought I would give it an hour. First sixty minutes were very interesting so carried on to the end..

Am glad this is neither an anodyne historical piece or a chest beating patriotic documentary, but instead it clearly explains the cultural and political issues faced by the US during WWII. I’ve read/ seen/ heard many things concerning Britain during both World Wars so found the viewpoint from another nation fascinating. And I do now understand/ appreciate why America was reluctant to enter WWII.

Martin Sheen does an excellent job with the narration - he hasn’t written this.

Arranged in an episode format, which could be seen as a positive if you would like to listen occasionally as it gives you a good point to stop, though I listened over two days so endured listening to the credits at the end of each episode. No biggy as you could just fast-forward it if you’d prefer too.

By breaking this up into multiple episodes, it made listening to the entire book awkward.

    "Excellent oral history"

This was fascinating at every level. I loved hearing the recordings of actual people talking about what was going on in the moment as well as the oral histories of people reflecting on their experiences.

For those reviewers who are criticising this as anti-American I ask you to take a look at why you feel so threatened. Our nation has done some very shameful and horrible things in the past. Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it. If you see parallels in the present day world, that's because we have not learned yet.

    "Martin Sheen is the best!"

In the interest of full disclosure, I am a huge Martin Sheen fan. He could be narrating the most boring thing and it’d be exciting to hear him do so. Nevertheless, the stories and the detail of life in America during WWII is in an of itself a work of art. Most of us are familiar with what was going on abroad, but this was enjoyable and interesting from beginning to end.

"Overall a very good impression, but really......"
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Well I was very interested in this as I'm a Swede married and living in the US and it's interesting to hear this from the US perspective. So, I guess I would, but I'd point out that I'm a bit displeased with the fact checking.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Home Front: Life in America During World War II?

Finding out that the fact checked messed up big time.

Which character – as performed by Martin Sheen – was your favorite?

    Anything with Martin Sheen......

Do you think The Home Front: Life in America During World War II needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

    huuuuuuummmmmmm

    Any additional comments?

Well I was thoroughly pleased until I got to Chapter 13 where the fact checked obviously completely messed up. There they quickly mention Raoul Wallenberg and refer to him as a SWISS industrialist. I rewound probably at least three (3) times and yes, they say SWISS industrialist. Swiss people come from Switzerland. Raoul Wallenberg was SWEDISH. He came from Sweden. The family still is around and I'm sure they want him referred to as SWEDISH. This is a major fail by Kathy Brady (sp) who was the fact checker of that chapter. The result unfortunately throws a bad light on the whole project as a lot of facts then become questionable. If a fact checker misses something that basic, how can we trust the rest of the facts presented?! So, I've listened through, but will never revisit. Most displeased with this. Raoul Wallenberg gave his life to save a lot of Jewish people from the Nazi and he's often overlooked when this is discussed. The Russians took him and he never resurfaced after that. Something more they're to be held accountable for.
