Summary

This BBC Radio 4 series explores the fascinating subject of human evolution, firstly by looking at the primary advantage mankind has over those poor saps, "The Animals": language. We explore the number of languages now in use (5,000 or so) and why the people of Lewisham don't seem to have chosen one as yet. Among other things, Professor Herring demonstrates his value-based translation machine, and we meet a man who thinks his bees are telling him about unsolved crimes.

Included are four episodes: "Language and Communication", "Social Development", "Science and Technology", and "Man or Monkey". Featured are Chris Addison as the lecturer, with Professor Austin Herring played by Geoffrey "Hitch Hikers Guide" McGivern.

Chris Addison has received two Perrier nominations and the Sony Radio Award for this series.

Hilarious

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

This is a brilliant audiobook/series, and I have already loudly exclaimed how good it is, when it was on BBC iplayer. This and its sister show - 'Civilization' are both well worth listening to.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, unfortunately due to the shortness of the series it was quite possible to listen to it all at once.

Any additional comments?

Chris Addison is full in his usual stride, if you like his comedy this is one for you. If you find his comedy too quirky/middle class I'd consider something else first.
