Summary

It's three days until Christmas and Junior Bender, Hollywood's fast-talking fixer for the felonious, is up to his ears in shopping mall Santas, Russian mobsters, desperate holiday shoppers, and ('tis the season) murder.

The halls are decked, the deck is stacked, and here comes that jolly old elf. Junior Bender, divorced father of one and burglar extraordinaire, finds himself stuck inside the Edgerton Mall, and not just as a last-minute shopper (though he is that too). Edgerton isn't exactly the epicenter of holiday cheer, despite its two Santas, canned Christmas music, chintzy bows, and festive lights. The mall is a fossil of an industry in decline; many of its stores are closed, and to make matters worse, there is a rampant shoplifting problem.

The murderous Russian mobster who owns the place has decided it takes a thief to catch a thief and hires Junior - under threat - to solve the shoplifting problem for him. But Junior's surveillance operation doesn't go well: as Christmas Eve approaches, two people are dead and it's obvious that shoplifting is the least of the mall's problems. To prevent further deaths, possibly including his own, Junior must confront his dread of Christmas - both present and past.

I have enjoyed the Jnr. Bender series, and this is the best so far.

Just fabulous

This is the 5th Timothy Hallinan book, I have “read” and it’s just as fresh and entertaining as the first.
Peter Berkot is an excellent narrator, I was a little worried when I realised he might be singing, but he pulled it off as well as the kids in the Mall

More complex than usual

I love these Junior Bender stories which are brought to life by the narrator. However, this one just seemed more complex than needed but I can understand the need to lay groundwork for books. I’m still a fan

Not my favourite in the series, but still ace!

This is the sixth instalment in Junior’s escapades, and it feels like a bit of a downer compared to most of the rest. The Edgarton mall feels claustrophobic and oppressive and overall everything feels rather sad. There are still some high points (a touching 1940s wartime backstory) but writing this review having already listened to the next book, I would definitely recommend perseverance.
The performance as ever is 5 star, and is definitely worth a listen as part of the wider story. Having said this, every book in this series is an addictive listen, and you will not regret the time spent doing so!
