Amazing reimagining

A truly amazing reimagining of the traditional Sherlock Holmes in a fantasy London. It is absolutely amazing and I enjoyed this so much more that I ever thought I would, could not recommend this high enough to anyone who likes fantasy or Sherlock Holmes, if it is both you should have already read it.

Worth a try but not for me.

I love urban fantasy and Sherlock but this didn't work for me.

Amusing

Off the wall interpretation of the great Conan Doyle works. If you not a purist I think you will find this interpretation of some of Holmes cases quite amusing and a times laugh out loud funny. If you are a purist be warned...

I so wanted to enjoy this, but..

I love the Sherlock Holmes stories and am also a fan of irreverent comic fantasy, so was looking forward to this book.
Unfortunately it doesn’t work very well. The plot lines are so based on the originals that when it comes to the Warlock Holmes input, the differences are just silly and puerile with little added by the author. The characterisation of all but Dr John Watson and the ogre DI are lightweight and underdeveloped, providing little interest in their story arc throughout the book, and I would hope that the author will develop the ideas through subsequent novels as the ending to this one demands a sequel.
As other reviews have mentioned, the narrator does not bring out the best of the characters and I struggled to keep a focussed listen throughout the book and struggled to remain interested.
I was expecting a Victorian London fantastical crime story in a similar vein to Ben Aaronovitch’s work in the Rivers of London series, but sadly this one was not it.

If Conan Doyle and HP Lovecraft got drunk and wrote a book.

I initially thought it would be a single story rather than a collection of short stories. Not that I minded, it worked fine.

Don’t really expect anything Holmes like. It is clearly a parody and the supernatural element drops it firmly in Lovecraftian waters at times, which isn’t a bad thing. It is well written though especially the use of Victorian language and the period feel. It is also narrated excellently.

For a bit of light relief this is recommended an enjoyable parody, well written. I have certainly read a lot worse. I will most likely read the next book in the series.

Brilliant reading

The stories are all based around the originals with a slightly devilsh twist. Well written and at times quite amusing. However, for me, the best part is the reading by Robert Garson. Every character is given it's own accent so that you know who is talking without needing to be told, and all the accents are very well done. Admittedly not the best book I have listened to, but one of the best read and for this reason alone I will purchase the next in the series and will look up anything else Mr Garson may have done.

Light listen. Pity about the narrator.

The book itself was fine - a little light entertainment with a supernatural nod to Sherlock Holmes. I disliked the narrator. His pronunciation wasn't good, I wasn't mad about his interpretations of the characters, but the most irritating thing for me was the pauses - random pauses in sentences, between paragraphs and so on - that I feel ought to have been edited out. The result was that the narration didn't flow well for me, which is a shame as I am sure that I missed a few interesting parts thanks to being distracted by the narration.

Mad Cap Book

This book is a spoof of some of the Holmes stories. What if Sherlock Holmes was actually a dimwitted warlock? It's in some places maybe a tad too silly, but it's well written and well read. There were some genuine funny parts and I thought it was pretty orignal. It does take a lot of imagination to follow it all though!
