Auch der Autor Christoph Hein besuchte eine Schule im Westen, da er in der DDR nicht zum Abitur zugelassen wurde. Als er 1961 zu Besuch in seiner alten Heimat ist, wird er vom Mauerbau überrascht und muss bleiben. Ohne Schulabschluss schlägt er sich als Montagearbeiter, Buchhändler und Kellner durch. In seiner fiktiven Autobiographie erzählt Hein von einer Jugend in der DDR der 50er-Jahre.
