Summary
Following the end of the First World War, Eneas McNulty joins the British-led Royal Irish Constabulary. With all those around him becoming soldiers of a different kind, however, it proves to be the defining decision of his life when, having witnessed the murder of a fellow RIC policeman, he is wrongly accused of identifying the executioners. With a sentence of death passed over him, he is forced to flee Sligo, leaving behind his friends, family and beloved girl, Viv.

The usual!!
Yet another book by S Barry that is quite brilliantly written with coruscating prose of the highest order.
A very interesting take on those caught on the wrong side of the Irish revolution.
Alas the storyline , for me, disintegrated into silliness towards the end.
All in all, well worth your money!

Aidan Kelly…
No narrator has left such an indelible mark (on me) as an audiobook.
Bravo to Mister Kelly and god bless Sebastian Barry for his prose

A beautiful story
A deeply moving and heart wrenching book. it is a fascinating look into the troubled history of Ireland and desperately sad. Beautiful and powerful prose. It will stay with me for a long time.

Lyrical and heartbreaking
Sebastian Barry manages to get to the essence of anything he writes about. This is the story of Eneas McNulty, a Sligo man who at 16 joined the British Merchant navy and sailed the world. He became an outsider in his own community and at the time when political and religious divides broke families and communities, we learn of how his choices affected his life and that of those close to him.
As a story, it rings very true, but Barry’s narrative is pure joy. He writes with eloquence. He’s poetic, but in a way that draws the listener in to the people and places.
Narration throughout is superb and I’ve enjoyed every minute of this audio title.

A beautiful writer
Barry's prose is breathtaking in its lyrical beauty. His sense of place and character are gripping. This is a glorious tale of a man exiled from a country he loved. Barry must be the finest writer in Ireland today - and that is saying something.

Epic
The narration of Aidan Kelly breathes such life into the indulgent prose of Sebastian Barry that the world of Eneas McNulty grabs the reader, and refuses to yield long after the rich tapestry of life in Ireland has been laid to rest.
Absorbing, breathtaking - life is but an adventure.

Sebastian Barry’s Writing
Such brilliance, such shining, warming brilliance.
Having read the book I was not expecting the audio telling of this story to match up; it did, and there again was the same voice in my head that I had as I read.

Simile-tastic
Sebastian Barry has a poetic style, no question, but the similes begin to overwhelm. Nothing is just as it is. ‘Like’ must be the most used word in the story. Every character seems to be a philosopher and poet. A tragic story of someone forced away from his community. Excellent narration brings the story to life.
