Summary

Forced to leave the Clan and her young son, Ayla sets out alone to travel the frigid steppes until she finds the valley of horses. Unable to find people like herself, the Cro-Magnons, she settles there and seeks friendship elsewhere. First she adopts a young filly, then a wounded lion cub. But far to the west, two young Cro-Magnon brothers have begun a journey. One of them is Jondalar, whose destiny is bound inextricably with Ayla's.

Jean Auel's imaginative reconstruction of pre-historic life, rich in detail of language, culture, myth, and ritual, has become a set text in schools and colleges around the world.

Great listen

Really loved the narration of this wonderful story. The Characters were bought to life in a colourful spellbinding way. I look forward to the 'mammoth hunters'

A great listen.. Had me hooked

I really enjoyed listening to this book. I was completely transported into the prehistoric world and the characters journey. Very well narrated. I Can't wait to move on to the next book in the series.

Perfect book, poor performance

What made the experience of listening to The Valley of Horses the most enjoyable?

I could shut my eyes and be transported to a different time.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Ayla. I have read this book MANY times and it's one of my all time favourites.

Would you be willing to try another one of Rowena Cooper’s performances?

Her voice is too old for this story. Both Jondalar and Ayla are young people Rowena's voice did not suit.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I love this book - always have.

Quality

Excellent follow up to Clan of the cave bear. This book is really a buttress to the rest of the series it seems, great narrator and just about to start The Mammoth Hunters.

J.M Auel does it again, I love this series. Rowena Cooper narrates beautifully, looking forward to book 3.

Promising but too slow & too many bedroom scenes

The series started out promisingly with fascinating ideas about prehistoric daily life and the development of language and cultural interaction. The reader has a very pleasant voice and is a pleasure to listen to. Unfortunately the pace is painstakingly slow and in this 2nd book the author includes far too many graphic "bedroom" scenes, degrading it into a cheap and dirty novel. In my opinion these are completely out of place so I will not be buying the rest of the series.

not as good as the first.

much prefer the first book. I find the 2 main characters a bit frustrating and the sex a bit laborious. I still like the general story though.

better than I could have hoped for.

it is so nice to be read to again, it takes me back to my childhood, though, I am quite sure this book would have beef to adult for our young ears... a won story and very descriptive ;)
