Summary

Random House presents the audiobook edition of The Toymakers by Robert Dinsdale, read by Ruby Bentall.

Do you remember when you believed in magic?

It is 1917, and while war wages across Europe, in the heart of London, there is a place of hope and enchantment.

The Emporium sells toys that capture the imagination of children and adults alike: patchwork dogs that seem alive, toy boxes that are bigger on the inside, soldiers that can fight battles of their own. Into this family business comes young Cathy Wray, running away from a shameful past. The Emporium takes her in, makes her one of its own.

But Cathy is about to discover that the Emporium has secrets of its own....

A dark, enchanting, spectacularly imaginative novel perfect for fans of Jessie Burton's The Miniaturist and Erin Morgenstern's The Night Circus.

disappointing

I was so excited to read this book. the narration was fine and the storyline. But I found it an unenjoyable listen. it was very vague in areas and often unclear. such promise of enchantment but sadly lacking

Not a patch on the books or models itself on. No match for the night circus or chocolat

I haven’t enjoyed a book as much as this for years. I know I’ll read it over and over again. THANKYOU so much for such wonderful imagination.

An amazing narrative of childhood imagination.

The story of a family that bring magic and fun to children through generations. The arrival of a girl requiring sanctuary and help merge together in this tale.

Not dull, but...

Strived to be magical, but never managed to sweep me off my feet. Interestingly read, wanted to finish, I'm not sure exactly why.

A feast for the imaginative mind!

This book is quirky. I am so glad I had the audio version, as I could close my eyes and imagine the wonderful world of colour and movement, the sounds of the carousel and the soldiers, the amazing and responsive creatures. As a child I often wondered if toys could think and feel, and this book is my 8year old imaginings but with an adult twist. It's a book once read will never be forgotten and definitely a gift for someone with an overactive imagination! I loved it and will definitely recommend it to others.

Beautiful

This is the most beautiful thing I’ve ever read and Ruby tells the story spectacularly well.

Great story and narrator, poor editing

Really enjoyed this book. Delivered on promises. But poor editing with quite a number of repetitions of half sentences that just doesn’t seem like writing style but simply poor editing. But someone who read the book can maybe correct me?

Disappointed listener

After reading glowing revues I had high hopes. Couldn't get to grips with this story.
