Publisher's Summary

Can a gentle werewolf heal the heart of a smart-mouthed mage?

New York Times best-seller Gail Carriger, writing as GL Carriger, presents an offbeat gay romance in which a sexy werewolf with a white knight complex meets a bad-boy mage with an attitude problem. Sparks (and other things) fly.

Max fails everything - magic, relationships, life. So he works for DURPS (the DMV for supernatural creatures) as a sumage, cleaning up other mages' messes. The job sucks and he is in no mood to cope with redneck biker werewolves. Unfortunately, there is something oddly appealing about the huge, muscled Beta visiting his office for processing.

Bryan AKA Biff (yeah, he knows) is gay but he is not out. There is a good chance Max might be reason enough to leave the closet, if he can only get the man to go on a date. Everyone knows werewolves hate mages, but Bryan is determined to prove everyone wrong, even the mage in question.

"Gail has not written anything I have not loved wholeheartedly"

I loved this book as much as all of her other works, the only thing I don't like, is when I run out, when they end & I have to wait for the next one... every single one has been a five star from me & I'd love to live in the world she has created, she is the Supernatural Steampunk Pratchett & LGBTQ- pansexual & pan-species to boot, all are welcome in this wonderful world & it's a beautiful all encompassing escape from the horror/mundanity of ours... Thank you so much & keep up the good work xxxxx

    "More San Andreas Shifters, please!"

A new author for me but I am so chuffed that I found her! I shall be gobbling up more of Gail Carriger's work from now on. I went straight to audiobook so our narrator, Kirt Graves, did an excellent job of sorting out some of those confusing niggles mentioned by other reviewers (about the back and forth, and in my opinion completely natural, conversations...if I remember correctly!) A great start to a new series. Love the characters, love the writing style and love the humour. More please!

"Sequels need to hurry up!! :))"
Would you listen to The Sumage Solution again? Why?

Yes. The chemistry and interactions between Max and Brian is worth a thousand listens. I loved thier banter, their inner monologues and just thier conversations.

What other book might you compare The Sumage Solution to, and why?

Probably The Blood & Bone Series by Lia Cooper. Both series feature a wizard & werewolf in a m/m romance. Although The Blood & Bone series has a more darker theme as it is a detective series. The Sumage Solution was more mellow and grounded in plot. But I like both series and am looking forward to the sequels in the Saint Andreas Shifters series.

Have you listened to any of Kirt Graves’s other performances? How does this one compare?

No. This was my first introduction to him. He did a good job. As it is the first series I am looking forward to seeing how he does in the sequels. I am particularly looking forward to his version of Colin or Lovejoy.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes if i could but alas sometimes work and sleep must be a priority.

    Any additional comments?

Only knocked a star of for the story as the climax was a bit predictable but a good cliche with loveable characters done right = a faboulous listen! And also to those who enjoyed this story definitely check out Blood and Bone series by Lia Cooper.

    "a joy to listen to"

I read the book when it was released, then listened to it two weeks later because I loved the story that much.

Biff is a big, wonderful sweetie-pie of a werewolf. Max is TROUBLE, a failed mage with a huge attitude problem.

This book is great. There is a big cast of well-drawn characters, an interesting plot, snappy dialogue, hot sex, and love. Lots of love.

Also, if the author happens to see this review, there better be sequels! I want Colin's story. And Lovejoy's, too.

The narrator did a great job. The character voices are nicely distinct and pleasant to listen to. I hope he gets to narrate the next one (fingers crossed).

    "Missing some world building..."
    Any additional comments?

Dual POV from sumage Max and werewolf Bryan, this is a paranormal romance with a lot of humor, banter, and sex.

Even though this is marketed as a standalone I felt the world building really lacked focus and explanation. I felt dropped inside a paranormal world with little to no explanation of how or why things worked. There are a lot of different types of shifters, magicians and humans, and a thing called quintessence that magical folk can manipulate, but I have to be honest that after ten hours listening I'm still not really sure what it actually is.

I honestly expected to find a far more complex story, but instead got one quite a bit lighter in tone.

I'm not going to lie...this took a few hours to get into and if I hadn't been reviewing it I might have put it down. Kirt Graves kept me going on this one.

Graves is good at providing clear character voices for all of the characters (and there are A LOT), and I was able to easily follow along with who was speaking. The narration is steadily paced and without a lot of over the top emotional inflection or performance.

I really liked that Graves put some extra touches into the audio like the vibration of a cell phone or text alert, which made it feel a little more interactive without being intrusive about it.

It did take me a bit of time to get used to the different audio sound Graves uses to denote the internal dialogue of the characters. There is a lot of internal dialogue. A lot. Which on one hand was good considering Bryan is the strong and silent type so we get a lot of his character development through his internal musings, but on the other hand, was also a lot.

Speaking of character development...the story lacks quite a bit in this area, in my opinion. I kept waiting for more, but it never came, which was really disappointing.

If you're okay with more of a True Mates sexy times kind of story with a lot of humor rather than one that has more complex world building and character development you should definitely check this out.

    "I loved it!"

I'm a huge audiobook listener but I'd never listened to Kirt Graves before. His narration is fantastic! Every character had a distinct voice and there are many lovable characters in this story. But not so many active ones that you'll get confused or distracted from the story.
There's not a huge amount of character development in the main characters, but you can definitely get a feel for both of them and what their lives were like as youngsters.
I will look forward to reading more in this series.

"lovely and happy, a great light read."

I really enjoyed the story and the world that the story takes place in. I wish there were more books that are like this.

The narrator was good. but every there was a text message in the book they make a buzzing noise which makes me reach for my phone. I found this annoying.

    "Cheeky fun"

I spent a few years living with gay men and drag queens and I think this is a fun glance at that world. The first listen was a little flat. But by the 2nd I could imagine a little more color hidden between the lines. I've just finished my 4th listen and I'm looking forward to more adventures with these new friends.

"Sweet and Steamy, with a Side of Vapid"

I am an avid fan of Gail Carriger, which is why I purchased this the instant I saw her name, without reading the synopsis. So, discovering it was a M/M romance came as a bit of a surprise, but that, in and of itself, did not detract from its potential. I did, however, feel a significant degree of disappointment throughout the first half of the book, because the story was very thin.

It had an almost fan-fiction quality, in that fan-fictions are often really self-indulgent, and far more invested in developing a relationship between the two main characters than in developing an actual plot. The first part of the story was carried by the sex scenes--of which there were many--and, don't get me wrong, they were delightfully graphic and intense; still, it was more like reading erotica. Truth be told, it is probably those titillating sex scenes that save this book from being an altogether waste of a credit...but, ultimately, that's not enough to impress me.

Even now, having finished the book, I don't feel as attached to any of these characters, the way I have always been attached to all of Ms. Carriger's other characters. These characters just didn't inspire deep feelings in me. I can't say for sure if I will have any lasting feelings of attachment toward the San Andreas Shifters. Book 2 could feature all new characters, and I wouldn't care one bit! Well, I might miss Marvin, but that's about it, and I'm not sure if I'd miss the character himself, or just the narrator's rendition of him.

I will say that there was a bit more plot developed throughout the second half of the book, which made this read feel more substantial than just reading erotica. Nevertheless, if someone asked me what this book was about, my answer would inevitably be: a werewolf and a mage have lots of sex and fall in love. Yeah...it seems like there should be more than that, doesn't it?

I thought Kirt Graves did a fine job narrating. Despite the somewhat flat nature of the characters, he admirably managed to bring them to life. Honestly, I credit his narration (in addition to my deep appreciation for the author, this novel notwithstanding), to my giving it as high a rating as I did. I feel like, had I read this in print, I might have enjoyed it less than I did by listening to it in audio form; in fact, I may not have even finished reading it.

As this is apparently going to be a series, I dearly hope the subsequent plot lines are more substantial, and the characters are more fully developed.

this title brings us back to the same world as the Parasol Protectorate books, but set in what would now be or modern times. Delightful read, and I can't wait to see more of it. Graves does a lovely job narrating as usual.

I loved the Parasol Protector series and as soon as I saw this one, I had to try it! I'm so glad I did. I hope we see more about Brian and Max's growth and about the other members of the Pack. I really enjoyed the narrator as well. He did a great job conveying the characters.
