Summary

The year is 1126. Heulwen, daughter of Welsh Marcher baron Guyon FitzMiles, has grown up with her father's ward, Adam de Lacey. There has always been a spark between them, but when Heulwen marries Ralf le Chevalier, a devastated Adam absents himself on various diplomatic missions.

When Ralf is killed, Heulwen's father considers a new marriage for her with his neighbour's son, Warrin de Mortimer. Adam, recently returned to England, is determined not to lose Heulwen a second time, which places them both in great danger, because Warrin de Mortimer is not a man to be crossed, and the future of a country is at stake....

An enjoyable read

Nothing too taxing in this romp, I enjoyed the tale and at some points fearing for our hero’s life got totally absorbed in the book, listening even beyond the time allocated.

Good continuation of saga

This is another good story in the history of the Welsh Marches leading up to the Stephen and Matilda wars. I enjoyed it very much with two exceptions. The editing in this one was poor with repeated phrases and uneven links which usually are not recognisable breaks in the narration. The other thing is subjective - Judith is supposed to be a strong, wise woman but, as in the previous book, she sounds like a vapid 16 year old...
