Publisher's Summary

The Reef is the story of Tate Beaumont, a beautiful young student of marine archeology - and of Matthew Lassiter, a sea-scarred young man who shares her dream of finding Anguelique's Curse, the jeweled amulet surrounded by legend and said to be long lost at the bottom of the sea.

Forced into a reluctant partnership with Matthew and his uncle, Tate soon learns that her arrogant but attractive fellow diver holds as many secrets as the sea itself. And when the truth emerges about the mysterious death of Matthew's father eight years earlier, desire - and danger - begin to rise to the surface.

True to form, Nora Roberts offers a story of grand passion and gripping adventure, bringing her devoted fans to the hidden undersea world - and to the deepest parts of the human heart.

What the Critics Say

"The Reef represents Roberts at the top of her form. Not only does the novel have a passionate, compelling love story at its center, but it is rich with intrigue, suspense, and a full complement of fascinating characters." (Library Journal)

    "A boring cliche, and disappointment"

I'm usually really easy to please, and not a harsh critic, but I totally couldn't get into this book. I'll admit, this was my first attempt at Nora Roberts. Are all her books this way? I love the genre of adventure / romance, which is why I bought this. But I could NOT latch on to the characters at all, and before I knew it they were already "in love", when I didn't think anything had even begun. It felt like I missed something, but I didn't. The Heroine falls for this guy before there is even any build up or anything desirable about him! Very strange. It made it impossible to feel any connection whatsoever.

Maybe it is the narration that I didn't like. It's read very very quickly, with no pause between sentences or phrases, as if she were trying to just get through the thing. Also, the accents just lost me.

I didn't even download the second half of this book. 2 hours in, I give up.

    "Such a Disappointment!"

This novel had such potential! However, as a diver, familiar with the Caribbean, it was pure disappointment. The disappointment began within the first chapters, when the author describes an underwater scene -- in the Caribbean -- with a clownfish playing in the purple tipped tentacles of a sea anemone. Only problem? There are NO clownfish in the Caribbean. There are sea anemones -- even purple tipped ones -- but no clownfish.

This went on to get even worse. In one scene, the protagonists kill a 10-ft tiger shark, underwater, with only their dive knives. The hide of a shark is incredibly tough -- such that random bites from other sharks when feeding don't even leave a mark. But a diver, underwater, with no particular leverage and only a run of the mill dive knife, was able to kill a HUGE tiger? Not possible. Not believable.

And then there's the scene where Tate is accidentally bit by a moray. For starters, morays won't attack unless you interfere with them. And IF they attack, it won't be a mere scratch. It will be a serious wound. Furthermore, the risk with a moray bite is that their teeth contain huge amounts of bacteria, so infection is highly likely, and more than an on board treatment with alcohol and neosporyn is going to be needed to stave off serious infection -- even from a mere "scratch."

Then there's the issue of the moray eating a grouper. Sorry, but morays usually hunt WITH groupers. One of my favorite dive guides taught me to observe the groupers because if you saw one hanging out in a certain way in a certain type of location, he was probably sheltering a moray in the coral behind him.

Unfortunately, these lapses in research ruined the entire book for me. What could have been a wonderful tale fell apart because the background in which it was set just did not work.

Finally, I know that this novel was published in 1999. However, in this day and age of "me too," the book's attitude towards women is offensive. Repeatedly, Tate's interaction with Matthew suggests that "no" doesn't necessarily mean no. After all, she really WANTS him, right? While I understand that this was an accepted attitude at the time the book was written, it was very uncomfortable in light of recent events.

"Narration ruined the book for me"
What disappointed you about The Reef?

Too long and drawn out. I felt like parts of the book were just added to make the story longer.

What do you think your next listen will be?

Not sure. Like Nora Roberts and will try her again. Not the narrator

What didn’t you like about Sandra Burr’s performance?

The male voices sounded like the narrator sucked helium before reading. Buck sounded like Popeye. The southern accent used for Tate was annoying.

What character would you cut from The Reef?

I wouldn't cut a character, just the voices.

    "Just Mediocre"

The story was typical for the author. It was on sale, so I got it. Her books are entertaining and don't require really close attention. The narrator's attempt at a Southern accent was almost the worst I've ever heard!

    "an oldie but a goodie!"

this has always been one of my favorite NR books, but I was worried it wouldn't "hold up" since it is pretty old. I'm so happy that it did! I just listened to it again for the first time in a long time and it was wonderful!!

    "I couldn't stop listening!"

The reef is by far the best book I have ever read. It started off with a twist, and through out the entire read there was something exciting happening. If I could have stayed awake and never slept, I would have read (listened to) the entire novel in one sitting. Wow, I have nothing but great reviews for the reef. If you need one book to read for your entire career, give this one a chance. There were just the right amounts of mystery, romance, excitement, twists, science and thrill in it.
