Publisher's Summary

The Reef is the story of Tate Beaumont, a beautiful young student of marine archeology - and of Matthew Lassiter, a sea-scarred young man who shares her dream of finding Anguelique's Curse, the jeweled amulet surrounded by legend and said to be long lost at the bottom of the sea.

Forced into a reluctant partnership with Matthew and his uncle, Tate soon learns that her arrogant but attractive fellow diver holds as many secrets as the sea itself. And when the truth emerges about the mysterious death of Matthew's father eight years earlier, desire - and danger - begin to rise to the surface.

True to form, Nora Roberts offers a story of grand passion and gripping adventure, bringing her devoted fans to the hidden undersea world - and to the deepest parts of the human heart.

What the Critics Say

"The Reef represents Roberts at the top of her form. Not only does the novel have a passionate, compelling love story at its center, but it is rich with intrigue, suspense, and a full complement of fascinating characters." ( Library Journal)

    "Not a great one"

I was just so put off by the narrator, that I had to return this one.

    "My 1st Nora Roberts book......."

This was the 1st book I read by Nora Roberts and I was very pleased with it. I couldn't stop listening.....she captures your mind and fills it with her story. What a great ride this was!

"Narration ruined the book for me"
What disappointed you about The Reef?

Too long and drawn out. I felt like parts of the book were just added to make the story longer.

What do you think your next listen will be?

Not sure. Like Nora Roberts and will try her again. Not the narrator

What didn’t you like about Sandra Burr’s performance?

The male voices sounded like the narrator sucked helium before reading. Buck sounded like Popeye. The southern accent used for Tate was annoying.

What character would you cut from The Reef?

I wouldn't cut a character, just the voices.

    "A boring cliche, and disappointment"

I'm usually really easy to please, and not a harsh critic, but I totally couldn't get into this book. I'll admit, this was my first attempt at Nora Roberts. Are all her books this way? I love the genre of adventure / romance, which is why I bought this. But I could NOT latch on to the characters at all, and before I knew it they were already "in love", when I didn't think anything had even begun. It felt like I missed something, but I didn't. The Heroine falls for this guy before there is even any build up or anything desirable about him! Very strange. It made it impossible to feel any connection whatsoever.

Maybe it is the narration that I didn't like. It's read very very quickly, with no pause between sentences or phrases, as if she were trying to just get through the thing. Also, the accents just lost me.

I didn't even download the second half of this book. 2 hours in, I give up.

    "I couldn't stop listening!"

The reef is by far the best book I have ever read. It started off with a twist, and through out the entire read there was something exciting happening. If I could have stayed awake and never slept, I would have read (listened to) the entire novel in one sitting. Wow, I have nothing but great reviews for the reef. If you need one book to read for your entire career, give this one a chance. There were just the right amounts of mystery, romance, excitement, twists, science and thrill in it.

    "Not Nora's Best"
What did you like best about The Reef? What did you like least?

I'm a big fan of Nora Roberts, and have read most of her books (so long as they weren't published by Harlequin). Most of her books describe a strong female character with realistic character traits - her male characters are the same. I did not like the two leads in the book, and found that their 'lines' were very cheesey. I'll just chalk this up to it being a book written by her a long time ago, because she had really developed her craft as a writer.

Would you ever listen to anything by Nora Roberts again?

    Yes

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

    Yes

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

    No

"A book by Nora Roberts - say no more"

Yes, it is a typical Nora Roberts book. Romance, intrigue, mystery, plot twists. In other words an easy and enjoyable listen - except for the narration. I found that the male characters portrayals were a major disappointment. Having said that one does get used to the narration.

    "Abusive Relationship"

I do like some of Nora's work, but I think I'm going to avoid her earlier stories from now on.

The main love story in this book is the definition of an abusive relationship. Multiple times in the story he uses his strength to make her do things she is verbally saying she doesn't want. He aggressively feels her up to 'teach her a lesson', gets angry and clamps a hand around her jaw, throws her into a boat to force her to spend time with him. Every time he abuses her to 'punish her', she responds by saying "Well I guess I deserved it." The only time he asks her "is this what you want?" she says nothing, to which he says "I'll take that as a yes". This is after she has already said 'no' and 'stop it' numerous times. No he doesn't 'actually hit her', but this is abuse none the less. With physical force used and excuses made the whole way through the book.

The story itself was interesting. I like the idea of a treasure hunt. I can overlook unrealistic plots and convenient twists. But the 'romance' in this book made me feel quite ill and I simply couldn't enjoy it.

The narrator was very good at switching voices convincingly. I'm a great fan of Nora Roberts so I know what I'm getting when I begin to read I enjoy all of her books.

    "Disappointing read"
What disappointed you about The Reef?

I purchased this book because it was on sale but now I see why. I am a Nora Roberts fan but I couldn't get into this one. I thought the characters were too young and immature - it read more like a teen novel. The accents were obnoxious especially the main character - it made me think that she was simple and naive. I also didn't like the main guy - I thought he was also too immature as well. I just wasn't getting into the story either.

What do you think your next listen will be?

I prefer Nora Robert books that have older, more mature characters.

What didn’t you like about Sandra Burr’s performance?

The accents were hard to listen to

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

    Disappointment
