Summary

When Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm published their Children's and Household Tales in 1812, followed by a second volume in 1815, they had no idea that such stories as "Rapunzel", "Hansel and Gretel", and "Cinderella" would become the most celebrated in the world. Yet few people today are familiar with the majority of tales from the two early volumes, since in the next four decades the Grimms would publish six other editions, each extensively revised in content and style. For the very first time, The Original Folk and Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm makes available in English all 156 stories from the 1812 and 1815 editions. These narrative gems, are newly translated and brought together in one beautiful audiobook. From "The Frog King" to "The Golden Key", wondrous worlds unfold - heroes and heroines are rewarded, weaker animals triumph over the strong, and simple bumpkins prove themselves not so simple after all. Esteemed fairy tale scholar Jack Zipes offers accessible translations that retain the spare description and engaging storytelling style of the originals. Indeed, this is what makes the tales from the 1812 and 1815 editions unique - they reflect diverse voices, rooted in oral traditions, that are absent from the Grimms' later, more embellished collections of tales. Zipes' introduction gives important historical context, and the book includes the Grimms' prefaces and notes. A delight to read, The Original Folk and Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm presents these peerless stories to a whole new generation of readers.

Interesting facts but bad voice

The facts at the start were interesting - I would like the chapters labelled with the story titles to make them easier to find. It’s the brothers Grimm so you know the stories are good - my favourite has always been “the wolf and seven kids/goats/sheep”.
The male voice is terrible; robotic at times when there’s no accent being put on audible when looking for a good speaking voice try British rather than American few Americans have good reading voices I find.
The female voice is great she has a fairytale mystical air to her voice and does alright voices for characters, they should of just hired her for the whole thing.

Never got to the actual stories

The introduction is so excruciatingly long I never got to the actual tales. The voice is monotonous and bored the life out of me.

Perfect for bedtime

I am struggling falling asleep. This book is perfect for bedtime listening. The voices are soothing and I can't help but drift off to dreamland with it. I've listened it again, and again, and again, and I will continue to listen it. This is my best purchase so far. Highly recommend it. Amazing.

Great fairy tales with darkness.

It was great listening to some of these dark tales. Definitely give it a go if you're into fairy tales.

Great Tales

A wonderful book that is excellently narrated by Joel Richards and Cassandra Campbell. The tales are how they were originally published in all their gory glory.

Disappointed

Too much preamble for my liking and the stories narration poor. Maybe I expected too much, maybe some tales are better read with accompanying illustrations.
