Summary

When Fiona Edwards first sees the lanky backpacker striding up the lane toward her award-winning farmhouse bed-and-breakfast in the remote mountains of North Wales, she's puzzled. She's used to unexpected strangers, but few arrive on foot. The man to whom she opens her door is middle-aged, unshaven, sweat-soaked…and arrestingly handsome. What neither of them knows at that moment is that their lives are about to change forever.

American Alec Hudson has carried the ashes—and the memory—of his late ex-wife, Gwynne, all the way from London's Heathrow Airport, honoring her request that he scatter them atop a mountain they had climbed together years before, the same brooding peak whose jagged cliffs rise to the sky from the back pastures of Fiona's farm. But the weather doesn't cooperate, and as Fiona and Alec wait for it to clear, they are drawn together by mutual loss, longing, and the miracle of love at midlife.

On the day he finally reaches the summit, Alec is caught in a vicious hailstorm. As he struggles to descend, he stumbles upon the body of a man he recognizes from a photograph at the farm: It is Fiona's ailing and reclusive husband, David, and he is close to death.

Will North's debut novel is a story about grief and hope, about love and loss, and about two people struggling with the agonizing complexities of fidelity—to a spouse, to a moral code, to each other, and to a passion neither thought would ever appear again. By turns lyrical and gripping, set amid a landscape of breathtaking beauty and unpredictable danger, this is a story you will not soon forget.

Good story, terrible narration

The story is a simple one but nice to get involved in. The narration is awful with incorrect intonation and a robot quality. Mispronounced words throughout almost made me give up. Such a shame for the author as I'm sure others will not continue listening.

Great book, well narrated

Loved this. Not over gushy. Great description of beautiful Wales. There was a salmon recipe mentioned which my husband is going to make!!
Good narrator too.
I also liked the fact it was a complete book in its own right. Unlike many that end up serials. I’ll certainly check out more by Will North.

ABSORBING STORY

This is the first Will North book I have listened to. Beautifully written and read. It made me want to go back to North Wales. Very visual. I loved it!

A joy to listen to. Atmospheric, adult, and a beautiful story well told. Will be hoping to peruse more books by this author.

A very touching read

I very much loved the very humane and believable presentation of this audio book.
It was very entertaining yet the emotions shown by the various characters were ones that anyone could identify it.
I very much enjoyed it and had to to listen to the prologue and the epilogue a second time.

Narrator spoils this story

This is the first time I have been moved enough to do a review. I found the story rather twee but enjoyable enough. However, the narrator's robotic voice and dreadful pronunciation ruined it for me. I nearly gave up several times and was quite relieved to get to the predictable end of the story. I will avoid anything else narrated by this lady in the future.

Awful pronunciation

I have made three attempts to get on with this and despite enjoying the story the dreadful pronunciation of the Welsh places has stopped me listening any further.
