Summary

The crying persisted. The door of the lighthouse clanged in the distance, and Tom's tall frame appeared on the gallery as he scanned the island with the binoculars. 'Izzy!' he yelled, 'a boat!' He vanished and re-emerged at ground level. 'It's a boat all right,' Tom declared. 'And – oh cripes! There's a bloke, but –' The figure was motionless, yet the cries still rang out. He hoisted out a woollen bundle: a woman's soft lavender cardigan wrapped around a tiny, screaming infant.

Tom Sherbourne, released from the horrors of the First World War, is now a lighthouse keeper, cocooned on a remote island with his young wife Izzy, who is content in everything but her failure to have a child.

One April morning, a boat washes ashore carrying a dead man - and a crying baby. Safe from the real world, Tom and Izzy break the rules and follow their hearts.

It is a decision with devastating consequences.

Australian actor NOAH TAYLOR made his name in critically acclaimed films such as The Year My Voice Broke and Shine, and has also appeared in high-profile blockbusters such as the two Lara Croft Tomb Raider films and Tim Burton’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. He recently starred in the accomplished British comedy Submarine.

Frustrating

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I would recommend the book but not the audio version

What did you like best about this story?

Didn't get to the end because of the narration frustrations

How could the performance have been better?

The reader needs to improve their diction. The sentences drop off at the end and the words consequently are not clear. Listening became an act of concentration at the expense of any enjoyment of the story

If this book were a film would you go see it?

Yes

Any additional comments?

readers should be vetted more carefully for pronunciation as well as expression.

Lovely story but with some sharp moral questions

I loved this book which was initially like a warm summer's day. Tom, after serving at the Front in WW1, returns to Australia and meets and marries the young and lovely Isobel. Wishing for peace and quiet after his war experiences Tom is drawn to serve as a lighthouse attendant on a remote island and Izzy is keen to join him there. That's the basis of the story but from there on in it gets complicated. I'll not spoil it.

However, there are some serious moral questions in this story and you may find yourself being torn in many different directions. I genuinely cried several times.

I've only given the performance three stars which is a bit mean but I found the narrator a little monosyllabic and in some of the slower parts of the book I found myself falling asleep.

Took a while to get used to the narrators voice but I was spellbound by the story and the beautiful language.

Brilliant book

What did you like most about The Light Between Oceans?

An unusual setting and story. Full of twists and turns and a cracking read. One of the best books I have ever read.

What did you like best about this story?

It painted pictures. I was there. I could feel just what they were feeling. Felt completely immersed in the book.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

I loved the decriptions of the lighthouse. The pleasure at seeing the men who brought the provisions and about their everyday life there.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When they realised the mother was still alive and when Lucy came back to see Tom.

Any additional comments?

I have recommended this book to several people and everyone has loved it.

Emotional turmoil, beautiful imagery, a real weepy

Sympathetic characters all, torn between difficult decisions and history with a bright light at the centre.

Unusual story

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would recommend this to a friend as it is unusual and well written but not to be recommended to a friend who is feeling down!

What did you like best about this story?

The story is unpredictable and sad but I wanted to know what happened to the characters placed in such an awful no win situation

Have you listened to any of Noah Taylor’s other performances? How does this one compare?

First one but I was impressed

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes
