Summary

In a snow-covered morning in upstate New York, a girl out riding her horse is hit by a 40-ton truck. Though horribly injured, both 13-year-old Grace and her horse Pilgrim survive. Annie, Grace's mother, refuses to have Pilgrim destroyed and hears about a man in Montana, a 'whisperer' who is said to have the gift of healing troubled horses. They set off across the continent to find him and there, under the massive Montana sky, all their lives are changed forever.

Good story but drags a bit

I would definitely recommend this but I felt, in places, that the story dragged - a lot of day-to-day action and interaction that didn’t really add anything. I think the narration is pretty good overall (although I understand what people mean about the female characters and the attempt at an English accent) and I liked the ending. Altogether, a wonderful love story interwoven with a touching depiction of a struggle to overcome trauma.

Wonderful story, beautifully told

Had me in tears several times. I became very wrapped up in the characters and cared about each immensely.

A very good listen.

Take your pick novel / movie

Revisited the movie and was interested to read book. both great. movie deviates more towards end of story and can see why Redford chose his own way. Either way love both. Narrator excellent , made experience all the more enjoyable

There was nothing I disliked. Really good story, wonderfully told by the narrator, spellbinding, mesmerising!

Mostly great story, questionable narrator

Up until the end the story is very good, but the narrator cannot do English accents, yet tried to sporadically through the book. All his female voices sounded very similar, which was disappointing

Taut atmospheric tale

If you could sum up The Horse Whisperer in three words, what would they be?

Horse gets better.

What did you like best about this story?

Combination of human/animal narrative and atmospheric Wild West setting.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

I loved the description of the night out under the stars on the cattle drive.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I have not quite finished listening to it yet, but the scene in which Grace has her first ride on horseback was touching, however, I think there may be a weepy scene ahead!

Any additional comments?

Beautifully read, and I now have a small crush on Tom Booker as a result of the lovely characterisation by the narrator, William Dufris.

Cinematic

1. If I summed up the ‘The Horse Whisperer’ by Nicholas Evans in 3 words, what would they be? - Pictorial, emotive and captivating.

2. How credible/believable did I find the narrator to be? - On occasion I found Grace’s voice grating and Annie’s English accent indistinct, but overall William Dufris did an admirable job.

3. Do I have any additional comments? - One reviewer described Nicholas Evan’s literary skills as him possessing the ability to - “paint with words” - I wholeheartedly agree. This novel is incredibly memorable, evocative and moving - an absolute pleasure and worthwhile read/listen.

“ Eventually, you will come to understand that love heals everything, and love is all there is.”
