Jocasta is just 15 when she is told that she must marry the King of Thebes, an old man she has never met. Her life has never been her own, and nor will it be unless she outlives her strange, absent husband.
Ismene is the same age when she is attacked in the palace she calls home. Since the day of her parents' tragic deaths a decade earlier, she has always longed to feel safe with the family she still has. But with a single act of violence, all that is about to change.
With the turn of these two events, a tragedy is set in motion. But not as you know it.

Wonderful
Haynes retells the story from a female perspective and makes sense of the old tales. The narrator is superb. She adds humour and humanity to what is a shocking story. She makes clear from the slight accent her Oedipus has that he is an incomer, an outsider. Just perfect!

Such characterful narration
A very satisfying retelling of the Oedipus/Antigone tale from alternative perspectives. The author’s note about sources and her creative choices was fascinating. And applause for the narrator- a range of convincing voices that brought out character in every instance. Very enjoyable listening.

Clever story, brilliant performance
Amazing rewrite of the classic Greek tragedy story of the house of Oedipus. Although it removes all the supernatural aspects, the story isn't any less enticing. in fact, it makes the story more believable, more relevant to us. The performance of Kristin was first class. I don't think I've ever heard any story as well read as her performance. well done.

Incredible adaptation
This is the first time I have listened to a book rather than reading it, and it was absolutely fantastic. I listened to it every chance I could and was gripped from start to finish.

Interesting take
This was a book club suggestion and would never have been my choice but it really worked. It is light but I learnt a lot of history whilst being entertained.

Amazing as ever from Natalie Haynes
Her works are always gorgeous and thought provoking retelling a of the classics. This is no exception, the tragedy is beautifully told in an entirely original voice

An imaginative retelling
This is a fantastic retelling of Oedipus’ and Jocasta’s story. Of course, because it’s the story of Oedipus, Jocasta, Antigone and Ismene - told from the point of view of Jocasta and Ismene, it’s also incredibly tragic, and very frustrating. You just end up feeling heartbroken for everyone. None of this is Natalie Haynes’ fault of course. She took a classic Greek myth, breathed new life into, told it from the point of view of a lesser known character, and gave us fresh insight into all the members of the story. Imaginative - but frustrating, but blame the source material. Or maybe, don’t blame - you are reading a tragedy, after all. As always, congratulations to Natalie Haynes for laughs, tears, gasps and all the emotion that a Greek tragedy should elicit. Read on, and be ready to catharize!

Ok
I didn’t like the ending I wanted the two characters to meet and I didn’t like how they changed Antigoni’s ending and how they called each other with pet names. The narrator was good .

Very well read
I loved the re-telling of this Greek tradegy. Kristine did an amazing job reading this book, I was absorbed by the story and couldn't stop listening! I would definitely recommend.
