Publisher's Summary

New York Times bestselling author Carolyn Brown returns with a heartbreakingly hilarious novel about three women who had nothing in common, except their husband.

Leaving one widow behind is unfortunate. Leaving three widows behind is just plain despicable. Oil heiress Kate Steele knew her not-so-dearly departed husband was a con man, but she's shocked that Conrad racked up two more wives without divorcing her first. The only remnant of their miserable marriage she plans to keep is their lakeside cabin in Bootleg, Texas. Unfortunately, she's not the only woman with that idea.

Fiery, strong-willed Jamie wishes Conrad were still alive - so she could kill the scoundrel herself. But for their daughter's sake, she needs that property. As does Amanda - twenty-eight, pregnant, and still weeping over the loss of her true love. On a broiling July day, all three arrive in Bootleg...with a dogged detective right behind who's convinced that at least one of them conspired to commit murder. One momentous summer filled with revelations, quirky neighbors, and barefoot evenings on the porch offers three women the chance to make the journey from enemies to friends, and claim a bright, new beginning.

    "Amazing"

I'm bereft now that barefoot summer has past and I will no longer spend time with these vivid characters through their deepest sorrows and journey to find themselves. Spectacular story coupled with a perfect performance. Will have to read again right now!

    Story
"It was a great book until..."

...the entire thing fell apart over the dialogue of an increasingly hoaky kid. Demanding, unrestrained and whiny. It commandeered the whole story. This book jumped the shark in Chapter17 and I decided I wouldn't skip 30 seconds 1 more time. Too bad. it had such promise. All the yapping didn't get the story anywhere. It was unproductive, so it fast became annoying.

    Spoiler alert: sort of

Too many unrealistic scenarios, including ideas of selling a big family held oil company, for the "love" of a complete stranger's child. After only a week or two. Everyone falling in love, new jobs miraculously appearing in a small town for outsiders and the perfect acceptance of church going folk. I'm from Texas, I go to church and I know better. Suspension of disbelief doesn't cover what you need for this section. The author was clipping along at a good pace until all this.

Since I already know what happens I'll give this up. If the author has another book, I'll try it as long as invasive child dialogue isn't evident.

"Conrad Was A Piece of Work--3 Wives!"

Well, reading this book made me think of growing up in Oklahoma and all the hot steamy summers, It is a nice romance story with three women thrown together at the funeral of their husband. Neither of them knew of the others but Kate was less emotionally involved because she had told Conrad 'no divorce and no money' and had pretty much moved on after the first year. The story takes place in a small town in Texas. The story was sweet but too sweet for my taste. I listened to it on audible and enjoyed the accents provided by the narrator, Donna Postal, but the story was too sweet. If you like sweet romantic stories with no sex and lots of old fashioned charm, you'll love this story. I'm more into murder and mayhem. It was a nice break and would be a nice beach read.

    "nice light summer read"

A little corny and pretty predictable, but a nice pleasant read for summer. Loved the characters. Good narration. I like this author.

    "Easy listening."

Don't have to be fully engaged to follow the story line. Somewhat repetitive at times but perfect to do housework listening to.

Most unusual romance/mystery of Three very different women and the polygamist who brought them together. Really enjoyed the story, characters, and Audible narration!

I am not even sure what made me finish it. The characters were flat, the story boring and uneventful. Not my cup of tea. Too corny...

    "Simply fun listen!"

Surprise sister wives who become almost "like sisters," is the story line. The character development is good; I felt like I would recognize the cast members if I met them on the street. The ending may be a bit predictable but...really...who cares? By time for the ending, I genuinely liked the characters so much that I wanted to clap at the "happy ever after!" this is an easy listening book but enjoyable from start to finish.

    "Imaginative plot but unsuccessfully executed"

I listened to this because I liked another one of her books but this one was just way too sappy and corny for me. I kept listening because I thought the whodunnit part might be worth it... It wasn't. Disappointing.
