Summary

From My Legendary Girlfriend to Turning Forty, Mike Gayle's bestselling novels have taken his millions of fans through many key times for the modern man - friendship, courtship, stag weekends, marriage, work, holidays, significant birthdays - but Seeing Other People is perhaps his most compelling, engaging and bittersweet novel yet.

Father of two Joe Clarke is about seventy-eight per cent sure he's just had an affair. After all that is the hopelessly attractive office intern in bed next to him, isn't it? But then again if he did have an affair why can't he remember anything at all about the night in question?

Mortified by his mistake Joe vows to be a better man, but when his adored wife Penny puts two and two together and leaves him, things start to take a turn for the decidedly strange. Joe is told for a fact that he didn't have an affair after all. He just thinks he did. Which is great news...or at least it would be if the person who'd just delivered it wasn't the crisp eating, overly perfumed and mean-spirited ghost of his least favourite ex-girlfriend.

Seeing Other People is a hilarious and bittersweet audiobook about love, parenthood and fidelity and how easy it is to get lost on the way to your own happy ending.

Want To Slap Him Round The Face With A Wet Fish

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Not really. It was way too sentimental and yeuky for me. I only got it because it was on offer.

What will your next listen be?

Something entirely different.

What three words best describe David Morley Hale’s performance?

Bit Julian Clary

Did Seeing Other People inspire you to do anything?

Force myself to keep listening so I would get it finished and could move on to something new.

Any additional comments?

Don't bother unless you like sentimental, daft stories in which you don't mind people who take the path clearly marked 'Stupid'.

What a great story and narrator!!!

You will love it. The characters are brought to life by one of the best narrators I've ever listened to.

I was late for work many times!!!

Disappointing

This wasn’t one of Mike Gayles best books… far fetched and unbelievable for me.disappointing and unrealistic.

Couldn’t help but wince towards the end

Ugh!
I love Mike Gayle’s style. I found that I enjoyed listening, but the story was really poor as a whole. It turned out exactly as expected and I finished the book wishing I hadn’t bothered.

An interesting twist

A great book with excellent descriptions of all the characters. I loved the ongoing mystery and the unexpected twist at the end.

Awful

Love Mike Gayle normally but this book just didn’t do it for me. Very predictable and very slow amd just boring. I skipped the middle 20 chapters or more and will return. Very disappointing

Oh?

I came to this book following close on the heels of previous works by the author, expecting the same sort of emotional roller coaster page turner.
This one didn’t work for me. As I read I’m usually second guessing the twists and turn that lay ahead, not this time, there didn’t seem to be any. I found myself wanting to slap the main character, who seemed to deserve everything he was getting.
A shame.

Predictable but a nice story

Spoilers ahead…

In GCSE English we were taught never end a story with “and then I woke up and it was all a dream”. That is basically the plot of this story, and it’s obvious from about chapter 3 that’s what’s going to happen. I love Mike Gayles books partly because they’re not really about the plot and instead focus on relationships and characters but this one I found frustrating because you just read about someone’s life falling apart but all the time you know it’s not real anyway so it doesn’t matter and there are no stakes. It was still an enjoyable listen and I wanted to keep listening to get to the end but not my fave of his books.
