Publisher's Summary

In 1946, artist Rebecca Swift's dreams of love and a life free from convention are crashing like the waves of the Australian coast below her. And it's into those roiling waters that she disappears.

Forty-one years later, Tess Miller's dreams are crashing, too. The once-successful New York editor has lost her most prestigious author to the handsome new golden boy of publishing. Meanwhile, she's stuck with Edward Russell, a washed-up Australian poet writing a novel about some obscure artist named Rebecca Swift. But Tess may have underestimated Russell. His book is not only true - it's a searing, tragic romance and a tantalizing mystery set in a circle of postwar modernists. When Tess uncovers a long-hidden secret, she's drawn even deeper into Rebecca's enigmatic life and death.

As Rebecca's past intertwines with the present, Tess finds herself falling for the last man she thought she'd ever be drawn to. On the way, she discovers the power of living an authentic life - and that transcendent love never really dies.

"Sorry to say couldn't finish "

listening to this so can't review the story aspect. Unfortunately the accents were appalling. I have read other books by this author and thouroughly enjoyed them ... so disappointing to have this one ruined.

    "a true love story"

I love Ella Cary's books. In this book it states "The only thing that matters in life is love" I believe this to be true. We might give up someone because we love them so much but know that they would be better off without you.

Loved it. Engrossed to the end. I felt I was watching it unfold in front of my eyes.

    Story
"A change of scenery for an old story"

Manufactured drama forced crisis’. Cute storyline one always finds tolerance for. Predictable outcomes written for the return in the hopes of resembling literature. Simple love stories gussied up by converging them in time in the hope of providing tension and complexity which the author was not able to achieve. Written with good discipline without inspiration but with passionate pretense.

    Story
"not as good as her other works"

I had to force myself to continue to listen. Very very slow and bland until it picked up about the last 2 hours of the book.

    Story
    "Disappointing Narration"

While some of the excerpts of the tale bordered on cliches, the mystery behind the love story invited the listener to consider aspects of Trust, Love, Defensiveness, Anger and Expectations in Life. But the disappointing aspect was the robotic, mechanical, aggressive, lifeless narration. The Australian accents were over done and forced. The male voices were obnoxious and poorly portrayed.

    Story
    "I had mixed feelings..."

I have mixed feelings regarding 'Secret Shores'. It took me a couple of chapters to know where this story was going. I think what bugged me were the chapter titles..Australia 1946...NY 1987...and every other chapter was described the same way. But like I said, I figured it out...so at that point I really got into it, so much I stayed up all night to finish listening. I adored the love story between the characters, but I did not like the ending. I felt as if I was let down...

So as in not to give anything away, you'll have to listen to understand. As far as the narrator, I didn't like her forced Australian accent. If we're going to be in another country in a book, pick a narrator who is British, they usually are the best.

    Story
    "Not the best"

I had listened to several Ella Carey books and enjoyed them but not this one. Most of the problems were with the narrator, I found her voice lifeless and hard to listen to. The Australian accent were forced and didn't flow at all. The story was very predictable and formulaic. I was disappointed.
