Summary

Der große Krieger Uhtred ist sächsischer Abstammung, wuchs jedoch bei den Dänen auf. Im jahrzehntelangen Kampf der Sachsen gegen die dänischen Besatzer wechselt er nicht nur einmal die Seiten und sucht immer wieder seine Position zwischen den Fronten. Vom sächsischen König Alfred wird er beauftragt, die dänisch besetzte Stadt Lundene (London) zurückzuerobern. Wer sie hält, kontrolliert die Themse, Englands Lebensader. Aber herrschen soll er dort nicht, sondern sein unfähiger Vetter Æthelred.

Uhtred fühlt sich - trotz dänischer Verbundenheit - an seinen Eid mit Alfred gebunden und nimmt die Stadt für Æthelred ein.
