Publisher's Summary

Reed is the last of the king's bastard triplets to fall into one of Edward's traps. He vows never to pay fealty to the father who ordered the boys killed at birth. On one of his raids he comes across Maggie Gordon, his childhood sweetheart who he thought had died the night of Burnt Candlemas. While Reed embraces being a Scot even though he doesn't have a drop of Scottish blood in him, Maggie is acting like an Englishwoman instead.

Maggie Gordon escaped Scotland with her baby brother the night King Edward III pillaged and burned her land. She witnessed the deaths of her family members and has vowed never to return to Scottish soil, wanting to leave her traumatic memories behind.

But now Reed is back in her life and as children they promised to marry each other. But her problem is that she's betrothed to a rich English baron - and Reed is nothing but a bandit.

Can feelings and memories be pushed aside so true love can shine through?

    "I'm absolutely addicted"

Elizabeth Rose and Brian J. Gill are a phenomenal team who seem to work together so well to bring us such exciting, romantic, and humorous books. This is a 5* book as well as a 5* audio presentation. Now I'm wishing for the audio books for The Seasons of Fortitude which is a continuation of this series, but features the sisters stories. Excellent experience, reading & listening. Don't miss out!

    Story
    "Loved it!"

Elizabeth never disappoints me with her stories. Brian has a wonderful voice to make me think I am alongside with the characters. Reed is reckless with his decision. I loved his pet hawk in this tale.

    Story
    "Action packed"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, I would. Not only is the story fast paced and includes plenty of action, it has an excellent narrator in Brian Gill. The way he uses his voices to portray the different people really brings the story to life.

What did you like best about this story?

I like that it gives you a flavour of what it was like to live at that time. Where the king's word was law and how different races were regarded and treated accordingly. I also enjoyed the sense of adventure and how important family became. There is also some romance.

Have you listened to any of Brian J. Gill’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have listened to one other performance by Brian Gill and again that was excellent. That was set in Scotland and I can't fault his reading.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I found the chess scene were Reed realised that his family were all behind him and supporting him quite moving. When he tried to outwit the king was amusing.

    Any additional comments?

This is an enjoyable audiobook, one that I had difficulty in switching off, as I kept wondering what was going to happen next.
I was gifted a copy and I voluntarily reviewed it. This is my honest review.
