Summary

Friends-to-lovers, feel-good gay romance. Contains a whole lot of man-on-man love action, preparations for Christmas, and an elopement to Gretna Green.

Impulsive and romantic, Connor is set to take over the family business, Sky High Scaffolds, with his siblings. But he might be ruled out as a future CEO because, even though he's almost 30, he's still single. Connor makes a life-changing discovery about a member of his construction team.

Lee is gay, but no one at work knows. The macho scaffolding crew isn't known for gay-friendliness. At 29 years of age, sexy scaffolder Lee is looking for love and commitment. He is not about to hook up with any straight guy who is going through a gay experimental phase. Especially not his work colleague and boss. Lee fears rejection if and when Connor wakes up and realizes he is not bisexual and not into guys.

Connor fears losing the love of his life if he cannot prove he's serious about him and win Lee's heart.

Christmas is a really big deal in Britain. The parties and preparations begin in November, at the latest.

In the construction industry, it means two weeks off work for Connor and Lee. Yes, two weeks. They've only been dating since September. In secret. They just want to spend the holiday time together, like any other gay guys in love. Alone and mostly naked.

And we all know the true meaning of Christmas is explaining and justifying to friends and family how you are spending the holiday and who with.

Sweet story...

If you're looking for a really sweet low angst story, then you would love this book. I did like the story but didn't love it. It flowed nicely and the characters are sweet and very likeable. The narrator is easy to listen, so the characters are easy to distinguish when talking. There is also a bonus Novella at the end of this book, which is a nice finish to the audio book.

A good story but not the easiest audio

What did you like best about Our Secret Wedding: Our Secret Christmas? What did you like least?

I liked the speed of the book, it moved along at a good pace. We dive straight in with Connor asking himself questions when spotting Lee in a compromising position and he takes action rather quickly, if a bit rash. Both characters take the time to build up on their relationship though which is great instead of just diving head first into the physical aspect, taking the time to learn about each other.

What did you like best about this story?

favourite moments - the beginning of the book with how quickly Connor seemed to want to jump into things with Lee. Very brash, wanting Lee but going about it in completely the wrong way initially. Oh, and THAT part where they head up north for the weekend! So friggin' cute!
I love the development of Lee and Connor's relationship, the speed they take it.

Would you be willing to try another one of Tod Scott’s performances?

Maybe one more to see whether it's any different to how he voices characters in another book, This one fell a bit flat for me, monotone.

Could you see Our Secret Wedding: Our Secret Christmas being made into a movie or a TV series? Who would the stars be?

I think so yeah, seeing them both work at their relationship from the outset. Bringing in supporting characters, Connor's gay friends, both their work colleagues/friends and Lee's family.

Any additional comments?

I enjoyed the story-line of the book with an enjoyable cast but things seemed to come to a quick end at the end of Our Secret Wedding but it was nice to have some more details of the developing relationship of Lee and Connor in Our Secret Christmas. This may have been an easier book to listen to with a different narrator but for me it fell flat with both character voices, not much difference between them.

Dreadful

The narrator was awful. Dreary is about the best I can say. No idea about the story, as I could not bare to listen any further.

Sexy and romantic & the voice performance is great

I read this as an ebook just over a year ago when it first came out. When Ms. Perry asked if I'd like to review the audio I jumped at the chance. Below is my original review with some added thoughts for the narration.

I very much enjoyed Tod Scott's performance of this book. I love the different voices he did for each character. I will be looking for more narrations by him.

Our Secret Wedding:
The friends-to-lovers trope is one of my favorites whether it be M/M, M/F or any other combination.

Connor and Lee were friends in school and now Lee works for the company owned by Connor’s father. One night Connor sees Lee kissing another man and that changed everything for him. He’s had feelings for Lee for a long time that go beyond friendship but he always thought that Lee is straight. He’s also been perfectly happy dating women but considers himself bi-sexual.

After Connor sees “the kiss” everything changes for him and he knows that he wants to pursue Lee as more than a friend. He doesn’t go about it in quite the right way, though and it puts Lee off. Connor begs for the chance to start over and thus begins his courtship of Lee.

The romance between Connor and Lee is slow to build – Lee can’t believe that Connor is doing anything other than experimenting – but once things take off there is a lot of heat and hot, sexy time! Connor is such a romantic man! He plans a big surprise for Lee and it turns out wonderful.

I really enjoyed reading this. I felt like there was a real connection between Connor and Lee and I loved following the development of their feelings for each other.

Our Secret Christmas:
I loved this "bonus" story about Connor and Lee. This story takes place during the same time frame as Our Secret Wedding but contains scenes that weren't in the original story. It's kind of a "behind the scenes" for what happened in Our Secret Wedding. It was great to learn more details about these two guys.

Audiobook & Book Review

Is there anything you would change about this book?

The second story seemed just a little confusing. Needs just a little more direction.

If you’ve listened to books by H. J. Perry before, how does this one compare?

This is my first audiobook by H.J. Perry, but not my last

What does Tod Scott bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The English accented voices.

Was Our Secret Wedding: Our Secret Christmas worth the listening time?

Yes, I think it was well worth my time.

Any additional comments?

I received a credit from the author to purchase the audiobook in exchange for an honest review. I’m a big fan of audiobooks, so when H.J. Perry offered a credit in exchange for reviews of her new audiobooks I happily volunteered. H.J. Perry is a new to me author and I’m always looking to add to my list. Audible book review: The book was narrated by Tod Scott. By the sound of his voice, he’s English, which I thought was awesome (because I have a *thing* for accented voices). Not expecting that, it did take me by surprise but soon I settled in to listen. I thought Tod Scott did a great job with all the voices. All the characters were distinct to my ears. The pitch and tone were good. There were a few female voices characterized and they did not sound overly false or too high pitched. Mr. Scott has a great voice and I wouldn’t mind re-listening to this and listening to other audiobooks he’s narrated.Book Review: This audiobook contains two stories; Our Secret Wedding, the main story and Our Secret Christmas, which is a short novella. Our Secret Wedding is a friends to lovers story where you meet Lee, who is gay and Connor who is straight but has a slight attraction to men that he’s never acted on. Connor and Lee have been friends for a long time and Lee works at Connor’s family company. One night changes the dynamic between Connor and Lee which starts something between them. As their relationship moves from friends to lover there is a variety of thoughts, exchanges and actions that keep the story moving forward at a good pace. The “drama” near the end seemed a little anticlimactic but it still worked. Our Secret Christmas was just a little confusing. At times it seemed like a prequel to OSW rather than a continuation. They still were good reads and I enjoyed them enough that I will check out other books in the series. This review is also posted to Goodreads.

Great fun!

I really enjoyed this audiobook. The set of voices from the narrator were amazing and I found myself laughing so hard people stopped and stared... but it was worth it!

The story itself is simple and romantic, full of though construction workers (well only two) finding that their friendship was quickly becoming something more.

Connor was super romantic all the time and Lee... I don't know even how to describe him, He is a bit more complex but equally lovable.

I normally don't do spoilers, so... keeping it clean I will just say that there were parts that had me biting my nails!

I recommend this book if you are into sweet, spicy romance.

Fun Construction Based M/M Romance

This is a steamy listen and Tod Scott has a great voice for this story, he keeps it authentic sounding.
H.J. Perry writes with a clear voice and a great sense of humor. This story is both fun and interesting especially as it gives another perspective to many issues. He made me stop and think about knowing who you are and being able to be up front about who you love.
Connor is a romantic who makes all the right moves and finally convinces Lee he is serious when he plans a surprise trip to Gretna Green to propose. They plan it all and keep it secret from all the guys at work not thinking they would be accepted in the construction industry. They are surprised by the response of the workers and family when Connors accident outs them both and they are accepted without a blink of anyone's eye.

Conner & Lee's Secret Stories 2 Captivating Books!

Any additional comments?

This audiobook is a book 1 and 2 of The SHS Series. What an engrossing book the writing was fantastic. The plot was entertaining and it was steady throughout the book. I found the story and characters wonderful. The characters were well developed and thought out. The characters are engaging their emotions can be felt through the story. Lee and Conner are the MC’s of this book. There was humor, family, friends, workmates, hiding, secrets, a Christmas party, traveling, surprises, a hospital, hot steamy moments as well and so much more in this book.

I can’t say that I was impressed with the narration it was average. Although he did attempt to change the tempo of his voice and show emotion so it wasn’t monotone. It was good enough that it didn’t detract from the story too much. His accent fit in the story line.

Here is a quote from Our Secret Wedding, “But Lee had never seen the room look like this. Flowers overwhelmed him. Colorful, floral displays were in every direction. “Having a clear out at a local florist?” Lee’s mouth spoke, but he instantly regretted sharing his thoughts. Connor glanced at him from the kitchen area and looked away as if a little embarrassed.”. And here is one from Our Secret Christmas, “Connor, however, found it quite funny now he understood the joke, but the time for laughing had passed. “You didn’t mention going to the Duck and Donkey or meeting up with friends,” Lee said. “Being a rather dull, almost married, stay-at-home couple ourselves, we didn’t know about the stripper night until about an hour ago.”. There is more but you will need to listen to the book which I can highly recommend.

Sweet, sexy romance

If you could sum up Our Secret Wedding: Our Secret Christmas in three words, what would they be?

Sweet, steamy, happy

What other book might you compare Our Secret Wedding: Our Secret Christmas to and why?

I would loosely compare this with Odin Nightshade's First Time Bareback Cowboy's series. It has the same sweetness in the romance and most of the angst is over what friends, family, and coworkers will think.

What about Tod Scott’s performance did you like?

Scot did a good job with the emotions of the story and was consistent in the different voices throughout.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Romance under construction

Any additional comments?

Both stories were interesting and engaging. I'm not sure if it was the story itself or the way it was narrated, but there were times that it felt like some chapters ended a bit abruptly. Other than that, the flow was good and kept me listening.

Amazing!!!

I loved reading the book so I knew I would enjoy this. Tod Scott did a fabulous job of bringing H. J. Perry's vision to life. Conner and Lee were already sexy and hot and listening to them made them more so. I love this series so much. When I listen to a story I have already read I'm able to imagine the characters even more vividly. Plus, there are things that you might of missed or not placed as much importance on that you should have. This is one you'll want to listen to again and again.
