Summary

Bringing together six short stories - two of which are previously unpublished - One Last Dram Before Midnight is perfect for fans of Denzil Meyrick.

These tales take us from Jim Daley's early days pounding the beat in Glasgow as a young constable to a lighthearted whisky smuggling romp involving Hamish and some ghostly pipers.

What a Treat!

I am not usually a fan of short stories but enjoyed these greatly. They were mostly quite long short stories and full of humour and pathos. Some had an unexpected twist and another was a fantastic sea buckling tale. I enjoyed humour and the good old Scottish language. Well done Mr Meyrick - I look forward to your next offering.

Great book but very hard to hear

I have enjoyed all the books on this series but this one is set on a very low volume compared to the others? Despite having the volume turned right up I just couldn’t listen in the car. Narrator is excellent as usual but let down by the very poor sound. I missed lots of bits so gave up in the end. Shame as the bits I did hear were good but as they were short stories I kept missing too much

Simply Fabulous!

I'm not often one for short story collections, I normally prefer to spend time getting to know characters and the majority of the time find the short story form doesn't quite have enough for me. This is something different though, a whole collections based around the Jim Daley series makes it fascinating. Meyrick treats us to stories that dart around the years including a younger Jim Daley and younger Kinloch residents . . .

And that's how it fixes my problem with short stories, the characters are largely already known and most of all it contains the real star of the main series which is the town of Kinloch and its inhabitants. Their wonderfully quaint homespun wisdom is splashed liberally over topics ranging from ancient antiquities to knitted bikinis. And when David Monteath gives them voice they sing like a choir!

Like most good short story collections there is a real variety in here but I can honestly say that, despite my tendency to avoid this format, I enjoyed this as much as the books in the main series.

5 stars all round.

Brilliant mix of stories, thoroughly enjoyed them all. Great idea bringing in Daley's earlier background with some of the other characters met in previous books.

enjoyed stories. volume poor

I have listened to to this authors books before and really enjoy them. This one was spoiled by the poor volume. I tried listening on both my mp3 player with speaker and my tablet but it was still low. Finished by listening with headphones.

Audio level too low

The audio on this seemed very quiet. Had to turn it up to full. I prefer a single storyline rather than short stories. Having said that, they were still entertaining.

I loved this book

I loved this book so much that I didn't want to reach the end. It was nice to have a mix of stories but I wish the book had been longer. The narration was excellent.

One last dram before midnight

Fantastic mix of serious, poignant and funny stories featuring DCI Jim Daley, DS Brian Scott and the residents of Kinloch, brought to life by the amazing performance of David Monteath.
