Summary

From an acclaimed classicist comes a witty, unusual, and fascinating "biography" of Homer's fictional Bronze Age hero, Odysseus. In this entertaining book, Charles Beye fills out the story of this extraordinary figure while at the same time portraying Odysseus' evolution through the course of a strange and adventuresome life, at times so remote, at times so immediate in the contemporary perspective.

A really entertaining listen!

If you could sum up Odysseus in three words, what would they be?

An entertaining listen!

What did you like best about this story?

Really strips down the character of Odysseus and the subtle nuances of his adventures. Wonderfully narrated - the narrator grew on me, at first I was unsure but quite quickly he hooked me in with his wonderful telling of the tale. Enthusiastic, witty and and entertaining.
I really felt that the author unpicked the stories and characters that surround Odysseus in a systematic as well as thematic way that would be genuinely useful to those studying The Iliad or Odyssey. There are many gems of information here and the biographical nature of the book made me marvel at how complex, sophisticated and humane the character of Odysseus is.

This book is somewhat of an unknown and could be easily bypassed but it is worth your consideration - particularly if you are familiar with the basic story of Odysseus ( though the story is literally retold here in a most refreshing and insightful way).

I have enjoyed listening to this book a number of times and it is always fascinating and enjoyable to listen to - for the insight, wit and wonderful narration.

I attempted the book but couldn't quite appreciate it first time round. I am pleased I got the audio version as I now appreciate an outstanding insightful contribution to the classic Greek hero and have had many pleasurable listening hours as well.

What does Mark Bramhall bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Great narrator - brought out the humour which I did not appreciate on my initial reading of the book. His enthusiasm for the tale made me feel like I was listening to one of my friends telling a fascinating at at times wonderful tale - respecting the story but finding humour in the telling. Definitely not a dry telling of the classic tale.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

If being entertained and feeling you got to know Odyseus as almost a real rather than fictional character then yes I was somewhat moved.

Any additional comments?

If you are even slightly interested in the book after reading this review then I think you ought to take a shot and give it a try.

Wonderful book and unique, charismatic narrator.
