Summary

My Mother's Shadow by Nikola Scott is the enthralling, heartbreaking and mysterious story of a lost child, a mother's secret and one golden summer that changed a woman's life forever....

If you love the novels of Kate Morton and Rachel Hore, you will love My Mother's Shadow.

It is 1958. Elizabeth has been sent away from her London home to the beautiful Hartland House in Sussex. Over an idyllic summer by the coast, she grows close to the confident young Shaws, who treat her like one of their own. A lovely but innocent girl, Elizabeth is ready to fall in love - but her dreams are dangerously naïve.

Decades later Elizabeth's daughter, Addie, is stunned when a stranger appears on her doorstep, claiming that they are sisters. Addie doesn't believe it until her beloved father admits that everything she's been told about her early life is a lie. For Addie and her new sister, Phoebe, it's the beginning of an emotional journey back to a time of fallen women and domineering fathers, as they discover the extraordinary truth about how their lives began....

Riveting

A perfect story - sad snd funny, with a mystery to be solved. Beautifully read. I loved it and couldn't put it down as I so wanted to know what had happened on 14th February 1960. Will definitely watch out for more from this author.

Bit boring

I was surprised to find this a bit boring as I normally live any kind of family mystery with split timeline elements. I just found the “mystery” quite predictable - not very mysterious.

I couldn’t feel engaged with any of the characters and never really wondered what would happen next. However, the writing style was good and the narration very good. You might like it if you don’t mind your books not being very exciting.

What a sad tale.

What a brilliant portrayal of how unfair life was for young pregnant girls in the fifties and early sixties. It was a lot worse in places like Ireland and in other uptight Catholic places I know but a very good story well told and sympathetically read. I totally enjoyed every page.
