Publisher's Summary

England is under threat from Napoleon, but it doesn't affect those in high society, or does it? Charles Baker, the young Baron Glazebrook, has happily fallen under the spell of a man of dubious character. He is rampaging over London, enjoying everything that a young man with a fortune could wish for. Clara Baker is compelled to try and protect her brother, no matter what the cost is to herself or her reputation. She made a promise to her dying mother and nothing is going to divert her from her mission. Edmund Ainscough, Earl of Chertsey, is a man with a reputation. His welcome in the seedier side of society makes him the perfect target for those in authority who want to know who is loyal to the king. Three people thrown together find their worlds, values and feelings can all be changed in an instant. All will face their deepest fears in this novel of love and betrayal.

    "I Spy a great story"

I'm suitably impressed by this author's skill in weaving a tale which is quite believable and all the while the reader is kept entertained and amused and almost participating.
I loved the potentially compromising situation that Clara puts herself into when looking for her brother Charles. And along comes Edmund, the Spy and a Rake, to save the damsel in distress. And the story takes off from there and continues on its merry way all the way to the end.
This is one of those stories that one wishes didn't have to end!
Brilliant narration by Melanie Fraser. So much so that while listening I totally forgot that it was only done by only one person.

I had already read this book but thoroughly enjoyed listening to it. The story is gripping but the reader lacked variation in her voice .

    "Loved it."
If you could sum up My Lord the Spy in three words, what would they be?

    Charming, funny and romantic.

What was one of the most memorable moments of My Lord the Spy?

My Lord the Spy is a charming, traditional regency romance. It has a real feel good feeling which made it a perfect reading choice to cosy up with on a cold, dreary day.<br/>The story has everything that I associate with the genre; lighthearted banter, spies and smugglers, humour and romance. Best of all, it had a little bit of suspense which made it an exciting read as well. I was happy to spend all day listening to this book.<br/><br/>I was also happy to note that this is a clean regency romance; they are in short supply. And I am delighted to have found a new author to recommend to a much loved aunt.

Have you listened to any of Melanie Fraser’s other performances? How does this one compare?

I have listened to many of Melanie Fraser's performances. I've enjoyed them all and as a favourite narrator I knew that I wouldn't be disappointed with her performance of a regency romance. I think this is one of my favourites, probably because I love the genre and her narration of My Lord the Spy complemented it so well. Her polished accent and lovely diction really enhanced the story as her narration adds an air of authenticity to the characters and the time period they live in. This is something that narrators who perform with an American or regional accent just can't offer. <br/><br/>There were quite a few different male and female characters to perform in this book and they were each done incredibly well. Each voice seemed to match them perfectly. Clara's in particular reflected her youth and sweet nature. Edmund's was suitably masculine and older than Clara's brother, Charles.<br/><br/>I enjoyed the sprinkling of sound effects. They added to the ambience of the scenes without being a distraction. My favourite was the background sounds on the beach during the smuggling activity and the scenes in the cave.<br/><br/>I'm looking forward to reading Henry and Millie's story in the next book. <br/>

    "Fun Regency Spy Romance :-)"

I enjoy Regency Romances and love them even more with some adventure so this one fit the bill. This is a relatively clean romance that has intrigue, suspense and action along with memorable characters. Since this is a new author for me, I was so pleased that this story was written quite well and also had good narration. I will be sure to check out the other books this author has available.

I was voluntarily provided a copy of this book and would like to thank the author, narrator, or publisher for the opportunity to review.

    "Sweet story"

I have enjoyed regency stories from time to time. I thought the author did a good job describing what I imagine were the way things were. I found this story to be a nice diversion. I thought the narrator did a good job. The story is relatively clean and I'd rate it at PG. "A nice historical romance"
What did you like best about this story?

I have always been fond of Lords who are spies. I also liked how the MC Clara was more afraid of her brother's reputation than her own. She was looking out for him.

Have you listened to any of Melanie Fraser’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

This is my first time listening to Melanie Fraser and I thought she did a really good job with this book. She tried hard with her male voices and they were not bad. I would listen to her again.

If you could take any character from My Lord the Spy out to dinner, who would it be and why?

Well, Edmund of course, who wouldn't want to dine with a handsome Lord who is a spy! ;)

    Any additional comments?

This is a short historical listen with an entertaining story. I really liked Clara and Edmund. If you like historicals you might enjoy this one. I liked how the audio used some effects in it like you could hear the ocean and seagulls, but it wasn't to over done that it took you out of the story.

    "Nice Regency Romance"
    Any additional comments?

This was a nice story and I enjoyed the occasional background sounds (birds tweeting, horse hooves on the road, etc.). They were subtle enough not to distract from the narration and were a great addition. Attitudes of people in this era were so different from what we would consider to be contemporary sensibilities. The narrator was engaging and enhanced the story. I enjoyed this audiobook and I would recommend it for listeners of Regency Romance.<br/><br/>I was voluntarily provided this review copy audiobook at no charge by the author, publisher and/or narrator. "Espionage thriller set in historical romance."
    Any additional comments?

My Lord the Spy by Audrey Harrison is an entertaining historical romance set during the Regency period and the Napoleonic Wars. Not only is there romance, but there are multiple scenes with action, adventure, and near death experiences for our heroes. The story centers around Edmund Ainscough, the Earl of Chertsey, who is secretly a spy for king and country and who is tasked with discovering who may be disloyal to the crown. <br/><br/>Due to his roguish reputation, Edmund is welcomed into the seedier parts of society, which provides him the perfect opportunity to spy on his peers. It is in one of these seedier establishments where Edmund crosses path with Clara Baker. Clara snuck into this house of ill repute to protect her younger brother, despite what it might cost her reputation. Acting out of character, Edmund agrees to help Clara with her brother because she is unlike any other female of his acquaintance. [Clara’s brother Charles was befriended by a con artist posing as his friend and this friend is slowly divesting Charles of his inheritance. Edmund and his boss suspect that this particular con-artist is up to more illegal activities than merely bilking unsuspecting naïve lords of their money.] <br/><br/>Melanie Fraser narrated this audiobook and she did a fantastic job. She really brought the characters to life, giving each character their own distinct voice. Melanie's crisp British accent and soft refined tones were perfect for this audio and contributed to my enjoyment of this book. In short, I enjoyed listening to this audiobook and definitely recommend it! <br/>

    "A great clean regency romance!"
    Any additional comments?

I love regency romance! What made it better was the narrator. She bought out the characters more. They felt more 3D. I thought she was one of the best female narrator that I have heard so far. She also uses music/gun fire in the background, which makes it a little more better in my opinion.<br/><br/>I gave the book a four because the characters would do things that are correct for that time period and do other things that would get the gossip mongers talking about for months, like, Clara going to an establishment a young women of good background would not set her foot in to. I understood why she did it but it didn't feel realistic to me.<br/>The other thing that I found really surprising is a rake that is unable to persuade a naive young female he likes to marry him. Instead he goes on a drinking binge.<br/>Even with this I still liked it and would recommend to those who love clean regency romance.<br/><br/>I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audio book by the author.

<br/>This story is about an Earl, Edmund, who is a spy trying to protect the country <br/><br/>when he comes across Clara, the female lead.<br/><br/>I don't want to give too much away.<br/><br/>The story line was filled with Suspense, Action, and a bit of Romance.<br/><br/>Overall, another Good Read from Audrey Harrison.<br/><br/><br/>Melanie Fraser did well with the narration. <br/><br/>Note:<br/>"This audio book was provided by the author, narrator, or publisher at no cost in exchange for an unbiased review."<br/><br/>
