Summary

When the topic of grandchildren comes up during a weekly sewing circle, the matriarchs of the founding families seek out the witch Elder to scry to see if their sons have mates. They are shocked to discover that many of their son's mates are out in the world and are human!

Fearing that their future daughter in laws will end up dead before being claimed and providing them with grandchildren to spoil, they convince their own mates that something must be done. After gathering all of the warriors together in a fake award ceremony, the witch Elder casts a spell to pull the warrior's mates to them, whether they want it or not.

Aiden McKenzie is adamant that he doesn't need a mate and that she would only get in the way. He doesn't have time to coddle a female. He likes his world run with military precision. Little does he realize, Fate is sending him his mate first! He meets his destined mate Meryn Evans and things go downhill from there. She is the embodiment of chaos. In the first 24 hours she kicks, screams, and knocks her bear shifting mate unconscious.

Eventually they discover that life before finding each other may have been good, but life afterwards is perfect, even if it involves super soaker battles and accidentally discharging hand grenades.

Unfortunately the joy of their mating is overshadowed when Aiden and Meryn find themselves embroiled in a missing persons case assigned to Aiden by the Lycaonian Council. By assisting Aiden, Meryn finds herself the focus of a demented killer.

Can Aiden and the elite warriors from the Alpha Unit keep Meryn safe? Or did Fate bring her to Lycaonia to die?

What a story!

Not your usual shifter sex antics that you come to expect in shifter books. This book actually had a back story, a heroine with flaws, a loving hero who adored her because of her flaws, a supportive family and lots of friends for a girl who had neither for most of her solitary life. I just loved this book, it had me laughing out loud, getting strange looks from my husband. I can't wait for the next one to come out, with the mate who keeps having accidents!

This is a brilliant book as it stands but the narrator made it come alive for me. I would recommend this book to everyone

Great story love that the characters are not simmering teens or twenty somethings however not great narration

It is a shame that the narration did not capture the book well. The reader did not seem to be able to convey any of the non-human characters and with that some of the great humour was lots. If you have time read the book

must read or audio book

A book you never get tired of reading or listening to. Well narrated, still think it would have been even better with multiple narraters, the charraters would have come across better. As the charraters are one of the books strengths .

Love!!!!!

At first I wasn't sure about the voice for Merlyn but after about 5 mins it was perfect, she got across the awkward character but brilliant mind very well while also doing the commander justice. Love you Aiden. xx

Has promise, but fails to deliver

This book had the makings of what could have been a decent story, but it just didn’t manage it. The characters were poorly introduced and developed and the story struggled to reach its potential because of that. There was the ground work for good humour and a world and characters you could buy into. The author has some raw talent but really needs a bit of honing and guidance. Shame really as if they’d improved this story it could be great and could set them up as an author with a loyal following, but instead they released it way to early - needs several more drafts and revisions.

Suggestions I’d make include having an intro chapter setting up the main characters and what their life is like before they meet, rather than jumping straight in to them being together. There is some background touched on as you go through, but there needs to be more of that at the start so you at least understand where they’re coming from when they meet. Also, the emotional leaps in their relationship were way too quick. Barely had conversations with each other then the female lead is saying they can’t remember life before becoming part of the male lead’s life - it was like a chapter or two were missing to get them to that point. Part of the fun of these types of books is going on the relationship journey with the characters, so omitting that completely makes you feel cheated. Going from confused and angry to passively acceptant seemed a bit odd too. To do that you really need to emphasise the inner conflict of logically thinking the situation is bad, but your instincts, urges and dreams making you do something emotional and impulsive despite your better judgement. The humour was a bit painfully slapstick at times, but I can see that it could work.

It’d be nice to think they could rewrite this book, give it a new title and try again with a new launch - but I’m not sure if authors do that. They need some honest reviews and constructive feedback too rather than the typical overly positive reviews that are more akin to saying ‘well done for trying’ to a child, just because they are a new author. Those types of reviews don’t help anyone. Authors shouldn’t be compared to novices and saying they put in a good effort, but instead compared to established writers so they can develop and strive to improve.

loved it

I really enjoyed this story and really liked how the paranormal world sits within ours. I really like how the different kinds of shifters live and work together along with several different paranormal species. it's not a series set with just one species but many. The H is all alpha male and absolutely commuted to his mate and his role as commander. The h is a spitfire and just what I love in a leading female. I laughed so much with her antics at times. I would recommend this to anyone who is a true paranormal fan!

Hysterically Funny & Irreverent Paranormal Romance

Don't you love it when a "first" book you listen to makes you immediately want to buy the entire series? That's what happened with this book. Within the first few chapters I stopped listening for just a moment to search and buy the other books --- they weren't there. NO...NO...NO. I NEED a My Commander fix NOW!!!

This is the funniest paranormal romance I've heard. It takes irreverent pokes at society. The author wrote things that I've often wanted to say and sometimes did much to my embarrassment. They say "the truth will set you free" and Meryn Evans spoke it with a good dose of "hoof and mouth disease". If you want tears running down your face with laughter, pee in your pants giggles and a snort thrown in for good measure, then listen to this book. Meryn takes on paranormal high society in the funniest way.

Aiden McKenzie, the Apha Unit's Commander, is out patrolling when a tiny human climbs the warded fence and throws his life into chaos. A human is his mate and she is everything he doesn't need to fit into his station in life. Not only is she human, she is an introverted geek and a computer genius. So, after she knocks him out (spoiler alert) he does the only thing he knows how to do. He locks her in the trunk and takes her home to his parents. They can figure out what to do with her. Let the hi-jinks begin.

I saw that one person hated the narrator. I thought she did an awesome job with her characters. Maybe that reviewer just doesn't have the same sense of humor that I do. Take the time to listen to the sample to see if the author's humor is the same as yours. It definitely tickled my funny bone. The only negative is the book stopped too soon and I felt left hanging as if I was at the end of a chapter rather than the end of a book. Otherwise, it's a 5 star laugh out loud book of wonder.

If you hurry, this book is a whispersync $.99 Kindle and $1.99 audiobook when purchased together. (5/1/17)

There are 8 -12 books (includes novellas) in the "Bewitched and Bewildered" series and sadly, this is the only one in audio format at the present time. Alanea Alder also has another 8 book series, "Kindred Of Arkadia". This author could be my "New Favorite" author if the other books are similar to this one. Now if Audible would just publish the other books in audio format.

Over 28,000 people on Goodreads rated both series with an average of between 4.19 - 4.38. We couldn't all be wrong.

So worth it

Alanea is an amazing author. She brings laughter and adventure to her stories that keep you coming back for more. Meryn and Aiden are the first two characters that you meet. Meryn is a firecracker of a woman who keeps Aiden on his toes as they learn about each other. But danger seems to be around every corner stalking Meryn. Can Aiden save his beloved mate from the feral's or will he lose her just like the nightmares foretold. Follow Meryn and Aiden on there journey, laugh and cry and then laugh some more. It's so worth it.

Second time is the charm

I purchased this book back in the summer of 2016, I love this author and this series, but the first narrator was not very good. Apparently authors do listen (I wasn't,t the only negative review) and found a much better narrator. Thank you Ms Alder. Please do whispersinc if you can, for we fans who like print and audio.

Just couldn't get into it!

Any additional comments?

I was in the mood for this type of book, but man did it disappoint! The chemistry between the 2 main characters is non-existent! Meryn, the heroine is so childlike that it's hard to feel a connection between her and Adian. It feels like a 30-old warrior god is pursuing a 13-year-old with mild Asperger's syndrome. Meryn accepts this world of shifters and vampires so easily that again I kept feeling like she had a low-IQ or something. I know all of her quoting of her pop culture references was supposed to make her a unique fiesty heroine, but it just didn't work for me.
I couldn't finish it, I tried but when you cringe at every line you know it's time to return the book.

Reads Like DICK & JANE Story

The story did have some cute humor that got old after hearing the same thing over and over again. The main female's was so weak afraid all the time you wanted to either scream 😲 or cry 😢.

I struggled to finish the first book and gave up on this one. I'm Sorry to say Don't waste your time or money on these.

A WICKEDLY GOOD, LOL, RIOT OF A PNR

I was so in the mood for something completely different.. and that’s exactly what I got with this hilarious, addictive ott paranormal fun fest filled with shifters, vampires, fae, magic and mayhem as one tiny single human spitfire turns a Bear shifter’s world upside down. Because you’d think a big strong handsome sexy Commander wouldn’t have any problems controlling and claiming his mate.. and yet the feisty little minx challenged and confused him like no other.

What a wonderful world Alanea Alder has created, the descriptive scenes enabled comedic virtual images to play out in my head making each scene colorful, enjoyable and very entertaining. From the Ball, the queen bitch encounters, the variety of secondary characters, the hidden threats, the suspense and danger, the occasional sexy times and the world-building was all very creative, well-paced and intricately woven to reveal a real paranormal gem. I will admit I thought the heroine sounded more like a rebellious child in the beginning but, as this skilful author drew me further in on her enchanted journey, that image was soon lost and a feisty, independent, geeky, shy, endearing, loving heroine emerged. The hero was just a big ol teddy bear you want to hug and kiss.. and when his alpha possessive protective side comes out you want to drool and dream too!!

Worth a credit? Definitely, if you want a lighter paranormal romance that has a few sexy times but it’s not seeped in them, that’s got hidden danger, a good who dunnit plot (that carries over to the next book) and an unconventional quirky insta-romance between true mates - then you’ve just found your next book. And the narration was excellent too.
