Publisher's Summary

The bestselling author of Yellow Crocus returns with a haunting and tender story of three women returning to the plantation they once called home.

Oberlin, Ohio, 1868. Lisbeth Johnson was born into privilege in the antebellum South. Jordan Freedman was born a slave to Mattie, Lisbeth's beloved nurse. The women have an unlikely bond deeper than friendship. Three years after the Civil War, Lisbeth and Mattie are tending their homes and families while Jordan, an aspiring suffragette, teaches at an integrated school.

When Lisbeth discovers that her father is dying, she's summoned back to the Virginia plantation where she grew up. There she must face the Confederate family she betrayed by marrying an abolitionist. Jordan and Mattie return to Fair Oaks, too, to save the family they left behind, who still toil in oppression. For Lisbeth, it's a time for reconciliation. For Jordan and Mattie, it's time for liberation.

As the Johnsons and Freedmans confront the injustice that binds them, as well as the bitterness and violence that seethes at its heart, the women must find the courage to free their families - and themselves - from the past.

    "Highly recommended!"

An excellent book with an excellent narrator. This is my third book by this author and I've enjoyed them all. Not knowing much about this time in American History, being British, these books have educated me through their powerful storylines. I was drawn into the characters lives and felt their anguish and pain. I was horrified at all the suffering the slaves endured, even the children, but the one thing that shone through the story was the strength of their faith in God. I would definitely recommend reading this for all the suffering the slaves endured hope shone through.

"Great follow on from the Yellow Crocus"
Where does Mustard Seed rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

    Very high on the list.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Mattie. A strong woman against all odds.

Which character – as performed by Bahni Turpin – was your favourite?

Jordan - an eye opener for her and me also.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Definitely yes but it took me two.

    Any additional comments?

After reading (not listening) to the Yellow Crocus was delighted to see there was a sequel. It didn't disappoint. Informative, heartbreaking storyline and part of history hopefully never repeated.

What a treat to return to the folks from Yellow Crocus, again I experienced so many emotions listening to this book! Not always pleasant, sometimes I was just so angry! The narration was absolutely excellent as was the story. I could hardly put it down. Definitely a must read!!! I’ll continue to look for additional books from the author and narrator. Amazing!

    "Some stories shouldn't have a sequel. "

The first book 'Yellow Crocus' was amazing. I was expecting this book to also be action packed. It was just 'blah'. Turpin always does a great job at performances but this wasn't her best. Sophie had a lisp at the beginning of the book and someone how Turpin didn't pronounce words with the lisp in the middle, and at the end, Sophie all of a sudden had the lisp again. There are some books that shouldn't be made into a sequel.

    "Awesome!!"

I am a total fan. I didn't want Yellow Crocus to end and Mustard Seed didn't let me down. All characters blossomed for me. This novel was full of action, intensity and true friendship amongst Mattie's family and Lisbeth's family. Let me be clear their immediate family, husbands and children. These women have matured and their friendship is tested. They manage to still support one another even In the most difficult times.

    "Not so great"

This book was a disappointment. It doesn't come close when compared to Yellow Crocus . It almost seems like part history lesson and part review of Yellow Crocus. The characters are blah and the plot is light.

    "Incredible Story"

It’s so easy to understand and love the characters in this book. The characters become real and their individual struggles as well. I knew little about this topic and personifying it made it hit home in a way I’ll never forget. I have listened to hundreds of audio books and this narrator is also exceptional.

    "Historically vivid."

Dramatically well narrated. Historically vivid and compellingly enjoyable read. I recommended for those who enjoy historical fiction, especially African-American fiction.
