Summary

Stepping from a battered coach on a rainy April eve, newly widowed Elisabeth Kerr must begin again, without husband or title, property or fortune. She is unafraid of work and gifted with a needle, but how will she stitch together the tattered remnants of her life? And who will mend her heart, torn asunder by betrayal and deception?

Elisabeth has not come to Selkirk alone. Her mother-in-law, Marjory Kerr, is a woman undone, having buried her husband, her sons, and any promise of grandchildren. Dependent upon a distant cousin with meager resources, Marjory dreads the future almost as much as she regrets the past. Yet joy still comes knocking, and kindness is found in unexpected places.

Then a worthy hero steps forward, rekindling a spark of hope. Will he risk his reputation to defend two women labeled as traitors to the Crown? Or will a wealthy beauty, untainted by scandal, capture his affections? The heartrending journey of the Kerr women comes to a glorious finish in Mine Is the Night.

Exceptional AND Narrated by the Author!

I did not listen to the first book in this series but I didn’t have any difficulty following the story thread in this stand-alone book. The narrator was first rate and seemed to TRULY know the story and the author’s intent because it was none other than LIZ CURTIS HIGGS HERSELF!!! I sent her a Facebook message afterwards because I could not believe it really was her. But as a long time radio personality that was probably easy for her. And her passion for the story comes through in the narration. To me this is the best way to get her stories, if possible because it is SO RARE to have an author do that – to narrate.

And this Naomi-Ruth inspired story (Lady Elisabeth Kerr and Dowager Lady Marjory Kerr) does a fantastic job of examining the relationship between mother (in this case mother-in-law) and daughter. It is obvious that Liz understands the give and take between adult child and parent. I was awestruck and I practiced as a psychologist for twenty-five years, so that comment does not come lightly.

The love story was wonderful and because it was based on Boaz, I was glad to know I was not going to have some literary device where the great hero is yanked from the pages and the heroine is left with someone else. So while there was a lot of tension I could also relax into the read/listen a little.

The romance between mother-in-law (Marjory) and another character (won't spoil it for the reader!) was amazingly well done. I loved how we had a mature couple with genuine affection and respect and they develop these passionate feelings for each other and (well, read the book to find out what happens!) I get tired of the twenty-somethings having all the fun! Great example of how God can give us another chance even if the first part of our life was not so stellar.

Liz’s description of Scotland and the people were so vivid, it was as though I was there. It is set in the mid-18th century after the Jacobite rebellion. Liz has 950 books on Scotland!!! Astounding! All that research pays off for the reader.

I highly recommend Mine Is the Night and plan to listen to my version again and again. It belongs on the shelf (or Kindle, or audio download) of every Christian historical fiction reader.

It's all in the details!

Would you listen to Mine Is the Night again? Why?

Would definitely listen again -love the story and the characters

What does Liz Curtis Higgs bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Liz Curtis Higgs brings personality to the characters - you can hear her love of the story and characters as she brings them to life.

If you could take any character from Mine Is the Night out to dinner, who would it be and why?

I would take Liz Curtis Higgs out to dinner - I met her many years ago when she was a program speaker - I would then talk with her about each of the characters and, of course, their relationship to the Bible characters on which they are based.

Any additional comments?

Finally, Liz Curtis Higgs' books available from Audible!

This is a masterpiece!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would tell family and friends about this book. It is a story to share. It is full of love, challenge, and longings. It is a story of encouragement. And it is based on the story of Ruth from the Bible.

What did you like best about this story?

I liked everything. And it had a HEA!

What about Liz Curtis Higgs’s performance did you like?

She did a wonderful job of narrating the book. I don't know how she wasn't crying during the recording. I would give her a ten if I could.

Who was the most memorable character of Mine Is the Night and why?

I want to say Bess because she is the type of person I long to be. Beautiful, kind, putting others before her. It could be Jack, the hero. To me, he is perfect. Marge is probably the one who went through the most changes. She was the example of what God can do in our lives. Each character was needed in the story or it would not have been complete.

Any additional comments?

I recommend reading the first book - Here Burns my Candle. I had read both books years ago. The first book is sad but sets everything up for this book. When I saw this on Audible, I had to get it. I was not disappointed in any way. If you love the story of Ruth, you will see how Mrs. Higgs followed the Bible. It is a good clean story filled with real world problems. Again, what a great audio book.

Blessed story!

Liz Curtis Higgs is a wonderful author and it is wonderful to listen to her narrate her own tale and give voice to her characters! I have been a fan of her bible study books for years and now her Christian fiction as well. Bringing tales from the Bible to a new era in time to show Gods wonderful timelessness!!

Second book is best!

I read a portion of Here Burns My Candle and struggled to keep reading. The historical facts seemed to weigh down the story a good bit. But this novel completely kept my attention. I loved how conflict did not come between Jack and Elizabeth but was built into the circumstances around them. It kept a sweetness about their relationship all the way though. He could always be the hero attentive to her every need. She could always see the goodness in him. I found myself running for the next chapter!

Much better than the 1st book and great narration!

Any additional comments?

..First of all this story line was much more enjoyable than the first one, and I love how the author incorporated a biblical theme into her novel. Excellent job at narration!

Sequel doesn't disappoint

Liz Curtis Higgs does it again. For a year I waited to know what happened after Marjory and Elisabeth boarded the carriage. The story follows Ruth and Naomi's of the Bible, but there's enough surprises to keep you turning the virtual page. And at the end, a thoroughly satisfying conclusion. I am a self-confessed LCH evangelist and push her books on everyone I know. She's just that good. Go ahead, get to downloading it, you'll see.
