Questo romanzo fu pubblicato nel 1927, e, conseguentemente alle idee dell’epoca, fu giudicato quasi scandaloso, mentre oggi può essere considerato “letteratura rosa”. Fu anche l’ultimo romanzo della Vivanti, che dopo di allora si dedicò al giornalismo. La vicenda narrata è uno spunto per una dura protesta contro il colonialismo degli Inglesi in Egitto, in cui è ambientata la vicenda. Cornice musicale: serenata malinconica di Tchaikovsky.
