Summary

Pacat's writing and Stephen Bel D - perfect
Loved the series - relieved that I only discovered them once all were published! It is an object lesson in frustration tolerance. I have noticed some criticism of some of the themes in the books. Other than the relative acceptance of m/m pairings, I did not read anything in this 'fantasy' which has not happened within many cultures held in high regard, particularly in the West within the last 150 years or so. Some may be titillated by the non-consensual aggressions/transgressions in the book; that is for individual readers to consider and not to assume how others experience them. I did not find these sections anything other than horrorific, and yet necessary, given the essential dynamics. I identified with many of the characters, whether good, bad, or in-between. A rare and very welcome occurrence for me. Thank you for the books C.S.Pacat. At a somewhat difficult time in my life they have been greatly validating for me, and after several years have brought about my falling back in love with love. Stephen Bel Davies was a perfect voice actor for me . . . at 90% speed his Laurent was an admixture of Bette, Marilyn, with a large measure of husky Lauren Becall! Changed my life x

Wonderful conclusion, magnificent trilogy
This was my favourite book of the series, Laurent's and character development was not only gratifying and well written but it made Laurent a character that had so many dimensions and was so interesting that I'm so sad there are no further books exploring his personality.

Magnificent
A wonderful end to a fantastic trilogy. C. S. Pacat’s writing is mesmerising and so memorable. These books, Damen and Laurent will stay with me and for that I am grateful. P. S. For those of you like me, who is sometimes an impatient reader, audio edition narrated beautifully by Stephen Bel Davies is a perfect way to slow down and enjoy the story and the stunning writing. Highly recommended as an audio book.

✨️ Accomplished Writing + Polished Narration
KR triumphantly concludes this Trilogy. The narrative structure is set pieces that have a beginning, middle and end allowing unceasing ramping up of tension. Numerous times I doubted that Damen and Laurent would win the day with every plot twist or set back or our men being put through yet another ringer! This exciting journey tests character by asking our protagonists to persist and keep faith with each other. So, my heart stuttered when Laurent in the first third of the book and then Damen in the last third let the side down. Like. How do you go on?!? Yet they do, they did and they gave everything to amend and atone. What l absolutely love the most? The characters grow including, gasp, Damen choosing stealth above brawn and, bless, Laurent choosing brawn without and before any verbal take down. 🤗 The Regent has a slight ‘boo hiss’ quality towards the end but he and his machinations are formidable! I also bow down to the other villains. Yas! So good! You know them from CP and PG and in KR, they move their chess pieces!!
🎧 I repeat myself when I say that the explicit scenes are very elegantly written. They are so sublime, so exquisite and, so, thank goodness that Stephen Bel Davies does them all justice! He emotes Laurent’s surrender perfectly that l needed a minute! ☺️ The narrator has such tight control of the vocal choices for all speaking parts that not once does he slip or let his chosen inflection waiver in heated exchanges or snappy verbal spats or group scenes. When characters’ dialogue, action unfolds or plots twist, you feel like a fly-on-the-wall. Overall, the narration work by Mr Davies is understatedly excellent throughout.
TLDR: The narrator settles into the characters and characterisations as the series progresses so that in King’s Rising, his work is unequivocally polished. Regarding the story being told, this is a treat with engaging protagonists, strong character work, intelligent dialogue, inventive plotting, nail biting set pieces, and thought-provoking dark themes that are all presented in a clever and entertaining way. There is just simply nothing quite like the Captive Prince Trilogy. Thank you so much, Ms Pacat. Very nicely done, Mr Davies. ⚜️

loved this
i was ready to DNF the capitive prince but stuck with it as the last third really set the next 2 books up. they had me gripped and this book almost finished me off with all the emotions.
I loved the complex characters and getting to see them change and develop.
the love between damen and laurent, was beautiful to see develop, so well written, heartfelt and real.
this is one of the few times I wished there was an epilogue set a fews later.

fantastic
Well written. Well thought out. A genuine pleasure to listen to. I've enjoyed this trilogy and I'm only sad the final bells weren't wedding bells but no book is absolutely perfect lol
