Summary

A beautiful, heartbreaking story of sacrifice and love in the face of evil.

'The story started at dawn on the 14th of September, 1943....'

All her life, London-born Angelika has been intrigued by her mother's secret past. Now planning her wedding, she feels she must visit the remote Crete village her mother grew up in.

Angie's estranged elderly grandmother, Maria, is dying. She welcomes Angie with open arms - it's time to unburden herself and tell the story she'll otherwise take to her grave. It's the story of the Nazi occupation of Crete during the Second World War, of horror, of courage and of the lengths to which a mother will go to protect her children. And it's the story of bitter secrets that broke a family apart and of three enchanting women who come together to heal wounds that have damaged two generations.

A wonderful book told so well with such love

i enjoyed every moment of this book it opened my eyes to the shocking way in which more innocent people lost their lives to the nazis...disgusting vile creatures!
i cried more than once and i feel i now want to visit the memorial and pay my respects.

Not as good as some other of her novels

I have to echo the sentiments of other listeners. I enjoyed the part set in the 1940’s far better than the rest of the plot. I found Angelina quite irritating- a weak silly girl given a whiny voice by the narrator. If she was supposed to be a mature woman she didn’t come across as one- more like a teenager. I stuck with it - it was okay but not her best novel. Also this is the fourth of her novels I’ve listened to, and whilst interesting for the historic content, they all do seem to be rather similar.

Terrible narration and repetitive narrative

I can't seem to finish this book, it is repetitive and a dull story with an awful main character. I bought it because i love Victoria Hislop's books and this was recommended but it's terrible - what makes it worse is the performance by the narrator - lots of shrieking which made it painful to listen to. Really disappointed.

Irritating lead character

It definitely wasn’t for me. I stuck with it until the end, but it wasn’t a book I enjoyed. Some of the bits based in the Second World War period were interesting, but the present day bits were just a bit OTT and annoying, the lead character and her mother were just irritating and the London accents were terrible (like an episode of East Enders) overall there’s just too many characters and too much jumping around.
