Summary

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Anne Rice, this sensuously written spellbinding classic remains 'the most successful vampire story since Bram Stoker's Dracula' (The Times)

In a darkened room a young man sits telling the macabre and eerie story of his life - the story of a vampire, gifted with eternal life, cursed with an exquisite craving for human blood.

When Interview with the Vampire was published, the Washington Post said it was a 'thrilling, strikingly original work of the imagination . . . sometimes horrible, sometimes beautiful, always unforgettable'. Now, more than forty years since its release, Anne Rice's masterpiece is more beloved than ever.

***The Vampire Chronicles is now a major TV show***

Recommend

If you like the movie you’ll like the book. Not the best performance or the best writing, but the story is cool and engaging.

Well written

it's always interesting to read a book after seeing the movie, the differences, the character details, the additions. If I were to be fair I'd say the first half of the book was better than the movie, far more detail, back story and character detail etc but, I feel the second half of the story was better in the movie, better pace and more direct

You will either love it or hate it...

If you could sum up Interview With The Vampire in three words, what would they be?

Best book ever...But then again, I am biased. I love Anne Rice and it's my favourite novel. I imagine it's a love / hate scenario, you will either love listening to Louis and his struggles or you won't. Either way, the writing is unbelievable. Not what you get these days, with vampire YA and all that crap - the picture Rice paints of New Orleans made me fall in love with the place years ago and I still hope to see it myself someday.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Too hard to choose. If you are already a fan, you know why (rhymes with les-dot).

Have you listened to any of Simon Vance’s other performances? How does this one compare?

First time listening to Simon Vance. I have read about him and wasn't disappointed. Listening to it for the first time really brought it to life for me and I caught things that I had missed before, having read it many times.

Masterful rendition

I first read this less than a year before the film came out. Simon Vance's performance is very different from both the film and the voices I heard when reading, but he unlocks the books slow, melancholy tragedy in a masterful way. I feel my understanding of this incredible and seminal novel is enriched for having listened to this.

Eternity is just a word

The philosophy of this book is spine tingling. The truth that no matter where we go we will always find ourselves. Simon Vance is impeccable. I suggest you check out his other works. If you've seen the movie, the book is still good and will allow you to recreate every scene in more detail and understand the subtlety of Anne Rice's writing much more than the film. I will say than compared to many adaptations of books. this movie for this book is good. Tom cruise I think is perfect. Brad Pitt is a great actor but perhaps not as perfect for the role. Anyway enough about the movie! Enjoy the book! I finished this faster than almost anything I've listened to on audible. and bought the sequel before I'd even finished it.

Loved this!

I absolutely loved everything about this! The characters (especially Claudia), the story, the writing and the narrator. Can't believe I waited so long to start this series, now I'll definitely be listening to the next one...
