Publisher's Summary

The year is 1928. Kate Moore is looking for a way out of the poverty and violence of her childhood. When a chance encounter on a transatlantic ocean liner brings her face-to-face with the handsome heir to a Chicago fortune, she thinks she may have found her escape - as long as she can keep her past concealed.

After exchanging wedding vows, Kate quickly discovers that something isn't quite right with her husband - or her new family. As Mrs. Matthew Lemont, she must contend with her husband's disturbing past, his domineering mother, and his overly close sister. Isolated at Lakecrest, the sprawling, secluded Lemont estate, she searches desperately for clues to Matthew's terrors, which she suspects stem from the mysterious disappearance of his aunt years before. As Kate stumbles deeper into a maze of family secrets, she begins to question everyone's sanity - especially her own. But just how far will she go to break free of this family's twisted past?

    Story
    "Surprise"

The author draws you into a web of sympathy for Kate, living in an ugly house where the sympathetic web gets tighter after the revelation of every ugly family
secret. Kate has her own secrets. Her mother-in-law thinks she knows all of them but there's one...

    "Just Okay"

Sadly, I struggled to get through this book. The premise was good, but the story seemed to drag on and the narration bored me.

    Story
    "Just Okay"
Is there anything you would change about this book?

I wanted to like this book, but it was just okay. I didn't find the twists and turns surprising or all that interesting. The book as a whole was very predictable. I barely made it to the end.

    Story
    "OK, except the narrator"

This story was intriguing but, very weak ending. And, the narrator was hard to listen to, very monotone. I did finish it but, had to speed it up.

    Story
"Perverted book of making your own way without God."
What disappointed you about In the Shadow of Lakecrest?

At the beginning the main character says she's going to make her own way without God (I should have stopped listening at that point) and the rest of the book is the result of that with lots of perverted twisted secrets including incest and murder and if I understood it right I think the author is talking about the aunt/teacher having "relationships" with some of her girls. I had to keep skipping to just get to the end w/o too much detail so I'm not positive about that last point. I tried to skip to the end just to find out "who done it", but it wasn't at the end so I backtracked a bit and listened to that, then skipped to the end.

What was most disappointing about Elizabeth Blackwell’s story?

Not a good ending and filled with horrible selfish perverted decisions, i.e., mystery solved but main character ends up exactly like her m.i.l.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Teri Clark Linden?

Idk, maybe this narrator was suited to this book with her sharp consonants and annoying "proper" enunciation.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Disgust, and disappointment in myself for even listening to this trash, but the perverted stuff doesn't happen until closer to the end and that is what I skipped over to avoid the chance of too much detail. However, before that point the book is just depressing. I guess it could be one of those sick Lifetime movies. I prefer Hallmark, and stories that are going to be entertaining, encouraging, inspirational, clean, happy ending, humorous, and throw in a bit of mystery. This story only has mystery, the rest is depressive bunk.

    Any additional comments?

This author goes on my "never again" list, along with the narrator.
