Summary

Wanna break up? There's an app for that.

Dexter meets Girlfriend's Guide to Divorce in this snarky black comedy that follows Eris as she toys with people's lives.

When 25-year-old Eris gets fired from her minimum-wage job, she stumbles on her friend's startup which outsources bad news to people. But will she manage to keep her friendships intact when she finds out she's very good at delivering breakups, when demand is really picking up, and when the recipients don't take to the news too kindly?

Inspired by the Greek Goddess of discord Eris and by today's app services obsession.

Do you want to meet Eris? Do you want to see the waterworks? Then listen to this black comedy that will make your heart break.

Crazy but true, I could see this become a reality

What happens when you put a girl who thrives on chaos in charge of splitting people up? Your success goes sky high. Eris, inspired very clearly by the goddess of discord, is hell on wheels, and after getting fired (taking her friend down with her) wanders about aimlessly until she takes a gig in which she is hired to break up unwitting partners so that their soon to be ex doesn't have to get their hands dirty. She proves to be a total success, and I could see a company actually making money doing this. I even appreciated the mention of the Golden Apple.

Vogel is energetic in her reading, and george is spot on in his writing.

I thought this was awful

I was given this free review copy audio book at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

So, what the heck did I just listen to? Seriously, I have no idea how to quantify it. It wasn't that funny to me, it wasn't romantic (even though it was categorized as such on Audible), and it was only 45 minutes long. That last one, though, was the ONLY reason I finished the book. Eris is annoying and came across as mean to me. The narrator's voice is REALLY peppy, which kind of seemed... off to me for someone who professionally breaks up with people... Anyway, I will not be looking for any more episodes from this series.

painful

This story has no depth, no meaning, no meaningful challenges, nothing to overcome, nothing endearing, and a main character that is flat and unrelatable. The story is just stupid, as if written by a high school student for his English class. The author really needs to read some books and study the basic elements of story structure, character arcs, deep point of view, antagonists, etc.

The narration is annoying! But i don't think that is the narrator's fault. I think she was acting out the always glib, one dimensional protagonist. And if she was directed to do so, then i won't fault her for it.

I was given this book for free in exchange for this honest and unbiased review. While this is not a positive review in the least, I respect the author's desire to write and finish a story as well as the fact that he actually had the audio produced and published, putting it out there. Hopefully this is a learning experience for you and you will rapidly improve in your understanding of what makes a great story.

Um, what?

I wanted to like this book. I really did. I liked the idea of someone who has the job of breaking up with people. How intriguing is that?!

Unfortunately, the story was very blase and the narration had levels of intense irritation. Vogel was trying to be snarky, I get that, but it came across more irksome.

At 45 minutes, this listen was still too long for me.

Eris Is Awesome!

Would you listen to Heartbreaker Episode 1 again? Why?

Yes. This was a very strong first episode and I am looking forward to sharing it with friends.

Which scene was your favorite?

The ice cream scene at the beginning.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes. It's short and sweet.

Any additional comments?

I thought this was an exciting and funny title. I was smiling in amazement for a good portion of the book. Eris is something else!

The pacing is just right.

The narrator, Kathy Vogel, was perfect for reading this. I really hope she does all the future episodes involving Eris.

This was worth the time spent listening to it. I have to highly recommend this one. This title was very refreshing and humorous. I will definitely be looking for more from this author/narrator duo. I am really looking forward to future episodes.

Interesting

take a girl Eris who can't hold a job a friend with a startup and you find the best pairing.
Eris is a bit on the morbid side but she finds her life job in giving bad news and enjoys it.
I wish the story was a bit longer for sure but as a teaser it's great.
the narrator was fabulous, she made you want to continue to listen to rest of the story.
I was gifted this audio book and have given this review to the best of my ability.
my final word is listen to or read this book if you are into dark comedy.

This God Complex world has me confused

This book was written in 2016, and I would have assumed we would have more episodes by now. Especially because the decision to turn this piece (short story?) into an audiobook was made several months after that.

I struggled with it. A lot. I’ve listened to short audiobooks that were brilliant. I’ve slogged through 12-hour books I thought would never end. ‘Heartbreaker’ was a weird listen that was like a short slog.

The synopsis is pretty accurate, so I won’t rehash the plot. Eris gets fired, loses her best friend Harmony, and picks up extra work at her second job. She freelances at a company that specializes in ‘dumping people’ on behalf of someone else. On its face, the job sounds fascinating – although potentially dangerous. ‘There’s an app for that’ is a common phrase, but as Eris points out, this is something that really needs to be done in person.

And Eris, snarky twit that she is, is suited for the position. She executes two such assignments during the story and both were…unique?

Kathy Vogel was enthusiastic, but unfortunately she mispronounced one of the first words and that word appeared repeatedly. (For the record, since I am Canadian, I checked with a number of pronunciation websites and a professional editor. Vogel used the British pronunciation of the word, not the American/Canadian one.) The rest was fine, so I can forgive it. Her voice for Eris was perfect and she was good with all the other characters.

I think this could have been a great concept, but it was never fully realized. Truthfully, it left me a little hollow.

BUT…

If you’re a fan of the macabre and/or are big on revenge, you will love this book.

What a concept!

In Greek mythology, Eris is the goddess of discord. Heartbreaker is short story about a modern day Eris, and she lives up to the mythological reference. She finds it difficult to not be straightforward to people regardless of what needs to be said. She has “no filter”. Join Eris and discover how she takes this interesting ability and turns into a possible career. The story is quirky and a fun listen. Seeing as it is named episode 1, I assume there are more on the horizon. I was given this audiobook, at my request, in exchange for an honest review.

Interesting start. Great potential for comedy

A good start to what could potentially be a great comedy series. I can see all the crazy situations that Eris can get into from a jilted lover snapping and stalking her to the elusive one that gets away every time. I would definitely enjoy listening to more.

The narration was good. Almost sounding like a “Valley Girl” but that also could have been how Eris was written.

I requested a free preview copy of this audiobook and I am leaving a voluntary and honest review.
