Publisher's Summary

Eager to find her place in the world and understand the frightening gifts she's been born with, Jessalyne Brandborn leaves her sheltered life to become apprentice to the most powerful sorceress in Shaldar. She hires Ertemis, the deadliest man in the realm, to get there.

With the Legion's bounty on his head, dark elf Ertemis is reluctant to escort Jessalyne but needs the money she offers - especially if he's ever to find out who his father is. On the way, he discovers benefits to Jessalyne's naiveté; she treats him like an equal, not an outlaw.

Swayed by Ertemis' gruff charm, Jessalyne starts to trust him and her emotional walls begin to crumble.

Little do they know that within them lies the hope of the dying elven race, the renewal of Shaldar's beleaguered kingdom and an incredible chance at love. If they don't kill each other first.

The storyline is weak, and predictable. Having said that, it's perhaps the ideal listen when sitting on the beach!

    "But it"

This was actually an impulse buy that turned out to be an excellent story and narrator. It's nice to finally listen to a story that isn't completely caught up with graphic sex every other chapter. The author actually concentrated on building the romance and relationship of the main characters . The sexual tension is definitely there but unlike other stories I have listened to lately it's a romance not erotica. I was able to listen to the entire book with out skipping past the literary porn. I'm definitely going to look into more from this author.

    "Great Story!"

Kristen Painter makes me want more and more of her characters once again! Heart of Fire has the perfect amount of romance vs villains. She ties it all up with history between secondary characters giving us a double happily ever after!

    "I love a Painter/Harrison combo!"

I really enjoyed this story. It is quite different then the other Kristen Painter books I usually read. I.e. Her Nocturne Falls and Jayne Frost series. It was nice to see a different side to Mrs Painter! This is about Jessalyne a sheltered woman who finds out she is not who she is suppose to be. She hires a deadly man Ertemis to escort her, which is not something he really wants to do. This is a great fantasy with mages and elves! i also absolutely love the way BJ Harrison narrates, the voices fit perfectly with the characters!

    "Another great author/narrator collaborative hit"

Kristen Painter's writing with B. J. Harrison's narration are always an unbeatable hit. Just the right amount of intrigue, tension, action, villainous acts, and love all rolled up. Then to top it all off, the incredible narration and distinction of voices done with just the right inflection and emotions. Job well done.

    "Loved it!"

The romance in this story is wonderful. There's an instant connection betwen the two main characters but since they struggle to see any good in themselves they cannot fathom that one could actually love the other. I enjoyed their good and bad moments between obvious affection to terrible misunderstanding that eventually blossom into a strong trust and deep love.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I listened to this book via audible. It was enthralling and entertaining.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I liked the heroines naivety and her perceptiveness at the same time. I admire how she befriended everyone she met and made them feel better or richer having crossed paths with her. And on a deeper level, the cross race acceptance was commendable?

    Any additional comments?

A romance where good triumphs over evil and love conquers all. And magic can be used for good. Lovely.

    "Wow!"

This book was amazing! It had me laughing out loud, "aww"omg at the romantic gestures by the hero and at times had me at the edge of my seat waiting to see what would happen next. The magic was intriguing and enchanting (pun intended). The love story between the two main characters was also a lovely dance between timidity and hot desire. Definitely worth a credit and was enjoyable from start to finish.

As far as narration, I was not sure about BJ at the start but he does a decent female voice and the male character's version is very alluring.

    "pleasantly surprised"

I don't usually go towards male narrated books, I've been horribly let down in the past, but this was an extremely well done performance. The story is very good and everything I look for in a romantic fantasy novel. The pacing was great too! I only wish it got a bit dirtier but that's quite alright, it was a pleasure to read!

This is a great book written by Kristen Painter and narrated by B.J. Harrison. Eager to find her place in the world and understand the frightening gifts she’s been born with, Jessalyne Brandborn leaves her sheltered life to become apprentice to the most powerful sorceress in Shaldar. She hires Ertemis, the deadliest man in the realm, to get there. Swayed by Ertemis’ gruff charm, Jessalyne starts to trust him and her emotional walls begin to crumble. The narrator B.J. Harrison did a wonderful job with this book. He did a great job with the different voices of each character in this book. It was very easy to listen to and I didn’t want to stop listening until the end. If you are looking for a great book with well-developed characters then you need to listen to this book. I am looking forward to listening to the next book by this author and narrator. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader’s copy of this book. The free book held no determination on my personal review.

"Sweet, simple, sappy.. more than a little lame"

The narrator had a great voice, with good characterization, if occasionally too bright, cheery and innocent sounding. I think that might have been sanity-defending sarcasm though. I felt a little bad for him.
