Summary
In the depths of winter in the land of Belarus, where ancient forests straddle modern country borders, an orphaned boy and his grandfather go to scatter his mother’s ashes in the woodlands. The Wild versus the Domestic
A deeply beautiful story, perfectly told by the wonderful Jonathan Keeble. A boy is bereft and finds himself living in the woods with his grandpa. Through fairy tales and war stories we discover the papa's past and the power of the forest. And beneath the sadness and survival the ancient dilemma between the longing to be free and wild, and longing for safety and comfort, is played out as life in the forest becomes increasingly harsh, and human connection calls out to the boy. I found this an amazing and satisfying tale on all levels and it still haunts me - several weeks after I finished it.

Thanks a I really enjoyed this book.I
Wonderfully written and told. Took me into grown up fairy tale land of monsters and good people.I felt the cold Could see the snow and imsgine the bleak yet beautiful landscape.A story of humanity and wildness brought together

Loved it!
I loved the language and how the words supported fairy tale themes, with authentic horror. I loved the narrative voice. As you listen or read (I’ve done both many times!) you are sucked into a emotive world, and the language either horrified or lulls. I’ve also read the Toymakers which I thoroughly enjoyed but I haven’t reread it (I very rarely do!).
I’m an avid reader and Gingerbread is in my top 5 of all time; alongside Tolkien, khaled hoessini, Wilkie Collins, Morpurgo and Tennyson.

magic, dark and moving.
loved this book. the relationship between the boy and his papa was fantastic.
my heart nearly exploded a few times while listening to this.
would highly recommend this and will definitely read more of Dinsdales books.
