Summary

The year is 1703, and Matthew Corbett, professional "problem solver", is missing. Last seen by his friends in New York before he departed on a lucrative, seemingly straightforward mission for the Herrald Agency in Charles Town, he's been too long absent. His comrade-in-arms Hudson Greathouse has an increasing sense the young friend he thinks of as a son must have met with some unexpected peril.

Following his hunch, Greathouse retraces Matthew's steps only to find him first presumed dead, then accused of murdering a young woman and apparently en route to London with a devious Prussian count last encountered on Professor Fell's Pendulum Island. Little does he know that Matthews's circumstances are growing worse by the second. For when Matthew arrives in the bustling squalor of Londontown, he's come shackled, charged for the murder of Count Anton Mannerheim Dahlgren. No matter the lack of body, presumed lost to the ocean. He soon finds himself locked up in the infamous Newgate prison, and has drawn the interest of a mysterious mask-wearing vigilante accused of several gruesome murders. Greathouse and the woman Matthew loves, Berry Grigsby, travel across the high seas to England to aid their friend, but it is impossible to know whether they will reach him in time to save his life.

Freedom of the Mask is the sixth installment in best-selling author Robert McCammon's acclaimed series of standalone historical thrillers featuring the exploits of a young hero the USA Character Approved Blog has called "the Early American James Bond".

The most surprising and ambitious volume to date, this is a novel filled with unpredictable twists and a note-perfect depiction of early 1700s London. Fans will not want to miss Matthew Corbett's most dangerous adventure yet.

A good read.

I found this enjoyable, but it did feel a little repetitive, but I held on and I'm looking forward to the next chapter.

Another great installment 👍

This series is sooo good!
Each book brings something new and intriguing into the storyline.
It's rare in my experience to find a series of books that doesn't suffer in someway the longer it goes.
Eduardo Ballerini is just perfect in each and every book in the series.

The best Corbett since Speaks the Nightbird

This has been a fantastic ride. Poor Matthew really doesn't get to have an easy life in any of the novels in the series, but in this one Professor Fell really digs his nails deep into Matthew's tortured soul thanks to Fell's kidnapping and drugging of Berry and Hudson.
The next novel in the series is nicely set up with the arrival of a potential uber villian by the name of Cardinal Black and some massive plot twists with betrayals within the Fell ranks.
Edoardo Ballerini has once again given another great performance in this recording, and with the majority of the book being set in London and Wales it was fantastic to hear some different character voices that had not been relied on in other book series. Ed really is a story performing master.
So it's with a baited breath and a sense of urgency that I must end this review and immediately start listening to the next book in the series - Cardinal Black - to carry on from that true cliffhanger of an ending.
Five stars all around. Highly recommend.

Next one quickly please

Love this series of books. The previous one was a shorter novel but led purposely into this one. Just need to wait for the next to see if the 17th century Sherlock Holmes saves his Berry. Please hurry

A brilliant & gripping listen.

A great continuation of Matthew Corbett’s trial & tribulations. An array of the good & bad in an ugly world it portrays. Not for the light hearted but the writing takes you to the edge of what you don’t want to know, pulling you back in time to engage with the action. Great writing & a brilliant narration & performance by Edoardo Ballerini.

The adventure continues

Another fantastic combination of writer and narrator. Gripping, compelling etc etc. Matthews adventures have to make it to the big screen

Frightful tale of evil men and women

Another chapter in the terrifying life of Matthew Corbett. Such terrible things happen to Matthew, one after another. I sometimes wonder why I like this series. It calls for prolonged suspension of disbelief, particularly concerning the number of injuries he survives, and although resolution and happiness seem just possibly around the corner, there is always another stumbling block, another criminal, another fight. I think it is the wealth of detail, the faraway time period, the hordes of weird and wonderful characters, and the continual suspense that keep me listening. Edoardo Ballerini is a superb narrator and the scenes he creates are truly vivid in my imagination. I am feeling a little drained after this latest adventure and how we have been left hanging by the awful ending. I might need to listen to something completely different before I return to follow Matthew to his next destination.

This book series is by miles the best set I've listened to, it's completely absorbing, exciting, and bail biting
